Isn't CCP's building located in a harbor a few feet from the Atlantic? Where's this aluminum monument in relation to that salt air?

The monument is like 20 feet from the water iirc.

You guys do know aluminum doesn't rust or corrode like most steal or iron does right?

Quick Google-fu:

Aluminum corrodes but it does not rust. Rust refers only to iron and steel corrosion.

Aluminum is actually very prone to corrosion. However, aluminum corrosion is aluminum oxide, a very hard material that actually protects the aluminum from further corrosion. Aluminum oxide corrosion also looks a lot more like aluminum (dull gray to powdery white in color), so it isn't as easy to notice as rusted iron.

And was wondering why there is such a difference.

What has changed in the playerbase in a year, that would have caused such a difference ?

That's exactly what i was thinking as well.

What the hell happened?

Though tbh, if someone causes trouble while visiting iceland for fanfest, just revoke their fanfest pass and make them pitch a tent near a volcano untill their plane leaves for home so the hotel and bars dont have to deal with him/her either.
I was there and don't even know what happened.. then again I didn't stay around til 6 in the morning.
Anyone else witnessed those things Triskian reported?..

My thinking was more on the scale of time CCP expects this monument to be around. The anodizing is a layer of ceramic like material on the surface that should replace the oxidizing effect in salt air. But again, i was thinking of the long term expectations.

Last year, Xenuria brought his Mom to FanFest, and she mentioned how much she enjoyed it. This got me thinking, and I asked my Mom (78 years young) if she'd like to visit Iceland. One thing lead to another, and while I was at FF, she was doing all the tours including Sisters of EVE. After FF we decided to kick it up a notch and went on a caving tour in one of the lava tubes.

She had a great time but thinks that SOE needs to be a bit more hardcore... Perhaps a special Mothers of EVE tour next year?

My Mom was with us this year too, She watched the DUST 514 keynotes with me, they gave her a free Quafe Shirt and she came to the party for a few hours too. There should definitely be a "Mothers of EVE" Event/Tour/Group ^_^

Malcanis, I do agree that one idiot can cast the many in a poor light.

But, judging by the earlier post by Triskian, it would seem that there was more than one idiot.

I thought one of the many reasons for going to the fan-fest was to have a beer and a joke with those you 'hate' in-game?

That was very much my experience. There were lots of chunky, pale, black-clad nerds at FF, but they were pretty much all happy, enthusiastic, bright people that it was a pleasure to meet.

Seconded.

And for the record, for every person of dubious hygiene or clothing options I met there were many many more happy well adjusted (except for being eve players) folks that it was a pleasure to talk to and be with.

Hmmm - a "Bring your mother to Eve" live event.... heh heh. Unlikely but interesting. I still recall watching my mother try to play Pac Man back in the early 80s.

Geezus, Fanfest seems to be so awesome and full of win kind of place. I was watching stream (or recordings at evening when RL got in a way during a day) wishing I could be there and experience it myself. And yet here we are in this thread...

Only thing I can think of is DUST. Not meant to be a shot at DUST players, but this year they were very explicitly urged to come, and then "treated" to a presentation that basically told them that CCP was moving away from their platform of choice. Note, I think Legion is a fantastic leap in the right direction and I'm looking forward to playing it, but I imagine the console fellas were less enthused, and perhaps a little more likely to express that anger in various ways. Pure speculation, though.

"EVE is a dark and harsh world, you're supposed to feel a bit worried and slightly angry when you log in, you're not supposed to feel like you're logging in to a happy, happy, fluffy, fluffy lala land filled with fun and adventures, that's what hello kitty online is for." -CCP Wrangler

I know at least a few people were talking about it when I was still in Iceland. Hopefully at least some of them will step foward with confirmation, but the sad truth is that anyone involved in the fighting will probably keep quiet about it.

Wibla mentioned seeing a fight at the hotdog stand around 5am one morning, but thinks it was locals not fanfest goers. The locals seemed to be involved in some of the other fighting from what I've heard and seen. Kesper had to pin a local against a wall for 5-10 minutes until they calmed down after trying to push past him roughly, and they looked ready to throw down until they realized they were being pinned by someone many times their size. I personally think that would've ended badly had Kesper not defused the situation in the way he did because there were three of us there with him and at that point we probably would've dogpiled the guy had he started throwing punches. It was almost funny watching the anger in the guy's face get slowly replaced with pants-shitting fear. I say almost funny because at the time it was funny, but after sobering up, it really wasn't.

For the most part my experiences with other people this year were stellar. Luckily, I didn't get involved in any of the fighting, but saw a lot of it, and heard mention of other fights.

Don't let what's happened prevent you from coming to a future fanfest. The reality is that for the majority of folks who go it is a fun time where you get to party with people you don't get to see all that often, and that's what it was like this year. Last year was a lot calmer despite the larger numbers.

Don't let a few jerks ruin the fun you could potentially have there.

E: Sorry for the double post.
