I'd love to hear that story sometime. Be nice to hear something positive round these parts for a change.

Last year, Xenuria brought his Mom to FanFest, and she mentioned how much she enjoyed it. This got me thinking, and I asked my Mom (78 years young) if she'd like to visit Iceland. One thing lead to another, and while I was at FF, she was doing all the tours including Sisters of EVE. After FF we decided to kick it up a notch and went on a caving tour in one of the lava tubes.

She had a great time but thinks that SOE needs to be a bit more hardcore... Perhaps a special Mothers of EVE tour next year?

Haha - awesome. My Mum's been asking me about Eve for ages.

Thanks for replying Big smile

Aaaaaaand relax.

One way or the other, we need to try and keep the monument intact. Someday, it may be found by an advanced species.

You know, I was just joking with my wife about this. Imagine if you will 1,000 years from now, the monument in iceland is one of the few things remaining of earth, all records have been wiped out and there is no cultural context to intepret.

A Meegob and his son (yeah I made that race up) come up to the monument and read the description: "From what we can discern, inscribed on this monument are the names of the dead from one of the space battles which occurred in Earth's history."

Son: Wow, that is a lot of earthlings to die in one battle.

Father: Yup, we think they were a pretty violent species.

Son: Weird names too. What does LOLCats48 mean you think?

Father: Well, some of the few remaining artifacts help explain that one son. Apparently this species venerated a feline species similar to our zargots, they were called LOLCats. They created thousands of pictures of them making strange faces and writing their ancient language on them. Many children were then named after the creature they worshiped. Since registering names with their species obviously required it to be unique, parents just added numbers. If you notice, not a single name on this monument is the same.

Son: earthlings were weird.

Father: Yup, let's go, we have time to see the giant ball of string that survived the destruction of the species. It is another memorial to their venerated LOLCats.

Perspective, people.

What's happening to people in Syria is terrible. War in Syria doesn't make defacement of the EVE monument any less terrible.

I'm not sure why you're comparing the two.

Unless you're going to get your checkbook out and donate, or strap a gun to your back and go help the rebels, please stop bringing Syria up like it's your own personal cause. This thread is about the EVE monument and how it pisses us EVE players off that someone screwed with it. Please stay on topic.

Absolutely incredible.
Terrible? Try lame. Juvenile. Petty. Insignificant.
Forgettable.

While there probably IS something out there that could resist both the salt-water splashing of a high tide in bad weather AND the clothing of people closely inspecting the monument (or of idiots who think their internet spaceships vendetta is worth vandalising a public monument for), I doubt that substance is inexpensive.

The substance is called glass

Hard, yes. Corrosive-resistant, also yes.

The problem with glass is that it is also brittle and tends to produce surgically sharp edges when shattered. Also, slippery when wet.

I'm thinking the city of Reykjavik probably DON'T want a monument where if somebody falls over on it while wearing goth pants, that person goes to the hospital looking like they just picked a fight with Freddy Krueger.

You ever tried to actually go through a thick plate glass window - like found everywhere in commercial buildings? Good luck.

Its not often I agree with Chopper
but when I do its because he has perspective and is damn right.

I read this post by Andski:

And then this post by Triskian:
https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=4557269#post4557269

And was wondering why there is such a difference.

What has changed in the playerbase in a year, that would have caused such a difference ?

people getting the crap kicked out of them over... flags. Punching someone out over a strip of cloth, breaking their nose, and kicking them when they're on the ground is (this happened, I don't know who it happened to, but it wasn't a pretty sight), in my opinion, far worse than what happened to the monument.

Hello Meryl, it's been awhile. For what it is worth I do not think that you are a sociopath in real life, you just don't fit into the boxes normal people would expect you too.

Edit: It appears that the monument was vandalized again, my name is now almost completely scratched out.

Both were dumb things to do

Out of game, as in game, I believe in consequences. That applies, here.

Lay off the 'worse things happen in Syria' argument, please. It lacks any logical relation to this.

That's exactly what i was thinking as well.

What the hell happened?

Though tbh, if someone causes trouble while visiting iceland for fanfest, just revoke their fanfest pass and make them pitch a tent near a volcano untill their plane leaves for home so the hotel and bars dont have to deal with him/her either.

If you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all...

Hey guys,

Just to keep you updated on this, we're moving forward with investigations and suchlike, and have had a visit at CCP Headquarters from a couple of players with further information this evening that's basically confirmed everything for us.

We'll have more details for you guys hopefully sometime tomorrow. Thanks for your patience.

Serious mental issues? OK, Doctor... if you say so.

A lot of them it doesn't take a doctor to spot something seriously wrong with some of these people. The guys who neglect their families to play video games? Yeah, not good there, though the one who tried to have sex and run PvP at the same time still stands out in my mind. The two player suicides I know of? Might have had some problems. Cosmic Horror was in a relationship abusive enough that her boyfriend at the time had a friend of his beat her till she miscarried (she was close to where I am and I visited her at the hospital). There was a guy in aridia back in the day who would spam bestiality **** in local that made even Duckeye's worst transgressions against the Minmatar chat channel look mild. It was one of the few good things about BoB running up into Fountain did was I never saw him again.

Now, granted, this is over ten years, and just the worst offenders. But yeah.

This is what we call anecdotal evidence. Even if it was true, which it might or might not be, it is still only a fraction of what is needed for your statement to be true. But yeah, people can be pretty crazy, I'll grant you that.

Some people are just vindictive, while many of us like to poke fun at you, the defacement of the monument is childish, uncalled for and just plain disgraceful.

Whoever vandalised it should be ashamed of themselves, and made to pay for repairs on top of any other sanctions imposed.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

I hope you're not expecting them to say anything beyond "we have discovered the person who defaced the monument and are taking steps to hold them accountable" when they do discover something conclusive.

Be sure to let us know exactly who did it and what the consequences were so that we can slap this baby into high gear and open the throttle to a proper threadnaught.
