I have to say the level of "hanging someone out to dry without any evidence" displayed in this thread is ASTOUNDING. I know Gevlon is a douche but he does seem to enjoy playing EVE, I doubt even he is delusional enough to do something like this and then broadcast to the world that it was him that did it. Wait till Falcon gets back to us tomorrow to let us know what happened and then feel free to crucify whoever ACTUALLY did this.

In true EVE fashion it's probably the OP trying to frame him.

My guess too.

Stupid question which the answer for doesnt really prove anything, but was Gevlon actually at FanFest?

Of course the Barbarians on their island have never learned proper Latin. But then they also worshiped Claudius...

Well that would have something to do with us preserving the practice of literacy so I believe we did whatever the hell we wanted with it.

The only practice you're preserving is pedantry.

I think this pretty much sums it up.

vandalizing the monument is way overboard. These are "adults" doing this really pretty sad.
I think if it is found out who the player(s) are they are vandalizing the monument the related EVE accounts should be perma ban.
And as well as punished based on the countries laws of vandalism.

Poor taste.

I want to just say that while many people may not like me or agree with my goals or agendas, I am a member of the EvE Community. EvE Online is a game and people who cannot understand that are the reason it is not safe for me to attend events anymore. When a person leaves the game but takes with them behaviors that aren't acceptable outside the game, this is a problem.

Example:
I am an enemy of the CFC but when I encountered players who are members I treated them with respect and civility. I even made some friends in the process.

In any case, there's still no excuse. Even if the anger was justified, the act was not.

Then we're of the same opinion.

There's a lot of judgements being made here about the person who did this. Hate the act, but lets not jump to conclusions about the person unless we eventually find out who and exactly why.

Regarding all those saying stupid sh!t like "monument was waste of my money" I would like to point out that the moment your money leave your account it stops being your money and becomes CCP's money and they can do whatever they like with it including building monuments left and right. If shopkeeper you buy groceries from buys a boat do you say "what a waste of my money"? Would you like your boss to say that to you when you buy another bucket of chicken wings?

A little less of frakking entitlement you frakking spoiled brats!

Investigation procedure:

CCP petitions Twitter for help tracking down the nature of the offender who defaced vandalized private property in Iceland, and is showing it off.

If: Twitter provides any information excluding an IP address, it's likely all faked, and won't be traceable to whoever the account owner is. The investigation falls to potential security camera footage, or asking for tips/eye witnesses, and dies there, with some sort of railing probably being put up around the moment.

If: Twitter provides an IP address for the offender, CCP can try to match that up with an account, and potentially take further action.

Either way, I doubt we will ever know the true identity of the offender, if they are caught. I simply hope that they receive a very long ban, on all their accounts.

You do realize that IP addresses don't uniquely identify people, right?

Arguing over spelling and grammar is a perfectly acceptable hobby.

I know what you are saying Scipio, but when people are charging up and down screaming "This is an outrage!" there's really no point attempting to reason with them.

I am pretty sure that in most EU countries is giving IP information away to private companies a felony.
No real court would permit this, maybe if the monument was from WW2 or something.

People lost respect to work, art and knowledge. It is just a mirror of current degenerate society with messed up values.
A 1v1 fist fight would be more honorable, or acceptable than damaging work of artist that has absolutely nothing to do with it.
Maybe I'm just getting old.

Just because Hellmar is fully justified in building a massive statue to himself and then pretends it's not about him at all, doesn't mean it's not a waste. The statue itself is the kind of thing a 3rd world dictator would do. People are also fully justified in watching michael bay and uwe boll movies, wearing popped collars and training as pick up artists. That doesn't make it any less dumb, or deserving of derision.

Somehow I suspect that the only reason vandalism and stuff like this doesn't happen more frequently is because of the risk of getting caught. And I make that statement based on how people behave in-game where the risk of retribution is next to zero.

So to confirm, you don't like it, therefore it is a waste, fact, regardless of how many eve players believe it's an amazing tribute to the game.

There is no metal in existence that cannot be scratched by something..................

Allow me to Cliff Clavin this and say that Tungsten is very very hard to scratch with anything other than power tools, and even then you have to do it on purpose.

I worked for a year as a marine mechanic and restored a car while wearing a wedding band made from tungsten. I did a lot of metal work with it on and you have to look close to see micro-scratches but there are no gouges or nicks. A friend of mine worked as a paramedic with a platinum wedding band and in months it was all but destroyed.

(He's still married, I should send him my old tungsten band...)

Of course, if the monument were made of tungsten, not even 1600mm cold rolled tungsten, where the names are, that would have been VERY expensive.

You know all it takes is one person. Even I would not have foreseen this.

You've obviously never been to Fanfest, otherwise you would realize that EVE Online and CCP as a company are some damn special **** in Reykjavik. The monument isn't a 'lol we're so amazing lololol'. It's a tribute to the amazing impact EVE Online has on Iceland as a country and Reykjavik as a city. EVE Online is one of the biggest export products in Iceland. EVE Fanfest is one of the, if not THE biggest tourist event of the year in Reykjavik.

The monument represents the impact of our digital universe on the real lifes of people living in Reykjavik. And that's pretty damn special if you ask me.

True.... could have uploaded the source image in a hotel. However, escalate this as a Criminal Offense (which it is), the police are going to investigate. If the guy that vandalized this won't admit himself, and CCP hands this through authority measures, if ever caught, hefty price and consequences. A game ban is seriously nothing to worry about if you did something like this.

Good luck whomever vandalized it. He probably read this thread and is laughing over this.

The only thing I find amusing overall is that guy who traveled there, stood in front of the monument and contemplated doing what he did reading all those names to find that specific one and defaced it. What a loser. He deserves a kick in the ass.

Edit: floppy grammar, corrected.

Crime & punishment. Someone might be getting their vacation extended. It's kind of hard to escape from a island jail.
