I love hearing the whiny crap from my southern neighbors every time they get a little weather.

Here I am sitting through a ball busting cold spell that'll freeze your pee before it hits the ground and feeling no sympathy at all. I'll be thrilled when it gets above -40 °C again.

-10 celsius isn't cold, and an inch and a half of snow isn't a snowstorm.

Felt like -42 here and there is 2 feet of snow in front of my house.

The entire point of living in the south is ice avoidance. Sure, you get nine foot drifts and still feel all warm and fuzzy. We get snow flakes that usually melt upon touching the ground - and rarely. It should be no surprise, therefore, that when this climate change that isn't really happening drops a few metric tons of ice on us down here, we are hardly prepared for it.

We are quite prepared to sit on the front porch sipping mint juleps on those sultry summer evenings, however. We can also withstand 99 degree (F) days with 99 percent humidity - something I daresay would have you northerners sobbing. In fact, though I'm originally from Boston, I've lived in South Florida for so long, if the temperature drops to 54 degrees (F), where you'd be outside bare-chested (you, too, ladies), I'm grabbing a sweater and thick socks.

You see, one of the conveniences of living in the sultry south is your blood thins. Whereas, up in yankeeland, your blood thickens. You'll never see me shirtless at a late-season Packers game puffing steam like a locomotive. No no no. And, I'll probably never see YOU getting a year's perfect tan by just walking out to the mailbox one day.

So, have a heart. The last time I scraped ice from my windshield was in 1979.

We got some snow and the roads were rough in a lot of places. I drove around yesterday and today, but I also grew up in Pittsburgh so ice and an inch or two of snow isn't new to me and I have a lot of experience with it. Had I grown up down here it'd be like seeing a tornado in western PA. It can happen, but rarely, and not often enough you'd really get used to it.

It's been warmer in Reykjavik recently than it has been here. Sad

e: Even having experience with this kind of weather it's never good to be out on icy roads and still plenty dangerous.

It's the same for me in Texas as it is for them in Georgia, we get snow/ice so infrequently that when it does everything just shuts down. And the Yankess up north laugh at us and say "that's nothing".

Come summer time we get the last laugh when it's 100 degrees F (38c) down here which is good spring time weather for us, yet up north people start literally dying of heat stroke when it reaches 90 degrees F (32c).......

I spent most of my life in Cleveland where feet of snow is not a particularly rare occurrence. We could deal with it because it snows every year and we expect it, so we'd all have bags of salt and snow shovels for our driveways and brushes for our cars, and the city begins salting the streets before an anticipated storm and keeps a fleet of heavy plows running for the duration.

I can't fault Atlanta for having trouble with an inch of ice covering all the roads; how often does it happen? Even in Cleveland, I've seen the city brought to a virtual standstill for a day or so by a sudden and very heavy snowfall or a salt shortage. Who the heck in Atlanta would even have a snow brush, shovel, and a bag of driveway salt?

Its cold in northern California. A couple days ago I thought people were going to start freezing to death when it hit 14 C. Right now its a chilly 18 C. I'm not looking forward to the summer. We could get up to 30 C or even 35 C! and we'll all be dying from the heat... Those temp changes are killing us Big smile

On a side note if any of you perhaps got too much snow we could really use a little water. Theres some space on the beach to chill at if you deliver...

In Canada we open all our hockey arenas so people can lie down on the Ice and cool off. Then again in Ontario where I am 20 degrees of that is just moisture in the air. Really the temperature only hits like 30(~90F) then its 50(~120F) with humidity...it sucks monster balls if you have to go outside for anything, If I wanted to go swimming id go to the pool, or the lake.

Weather up in the North East is whack. ~80 degree temperature swings every 6 months. Which is why its Too fecking cold. or Too fecking hot depending if its December or June.

I hate people who complain about the cold though. Come summer you can only get so naked before you get a fine. At least in the winter I can uncomfortably wear my entire wardrobe and stay warm....and if I want to run around naked no one says anything to anyone other than "That guy must be some kind of nutter."

90? I have a heatstroke when it gets over 70. I live in Minnesota and may have to migrate north as it is getting to be too warm in this state.

This thread reminds me of a trip to Bermuda I made over Xmas holidays several years ago. It was a beautiful 20 deg. C so we went swimming in the ocean. The locals were walking their dogs on the beach and wearing big down filled jackets...

But yeah, someone from Atlanta probably doesn't know what an "all season" tire is, let alone a "winter" tire. Add some ice on the road and I get it, not hard to understand they aren't prepared for that kind of situation at all.

As for me, the snowbank I made by shovelling my driveway was already 6 feet high in early December. I'd be more than willing to trade with Atlanta. You can have the slow moving plow trucks throwing down dirty sand or corroding salt, the swapping of winter tires, the shovels or snowblowers, the scrapers, the constant filling of windshield washer fluid in exchange for one or two days of icy roads. Please. :)

And those of us further north than them "damn Yankees" just have a good giggle.

But we still send utility/hydro crews and snow plows across the border, south of "The 49th", to help out anyway. Blink
