hey people of eve!

shoutout to everyone all over the universe. first of all, my friend recommended me to this game that is so friggin cool. the graphics and gameplay are so different from other games. im now considering to get a bigger screen to improve my experience. heh

ive been lurking the forums for abit and decided to use my first post to ask a nagging question:
how do i know which player i am talking to is actually a male or female. in forums and in games people are addressing female portraits as "he" or "him" as if they know who they already are. there are a humongous amount of female portraits as well. i myself created one female character because it looks nice. i know this is not the best place to ask this but other forums are locked because im a trial user

is there anyway to "background check"? reason being i met loads of mmo players who make use of a roleplay to get equips and money. i kinda have a weak heart towards a female player *cough* so hoping to get a hint on whether i can find out if im talking to a guy or lady. you know, for purposes of respect.

cheers people!

Best way to respect women is to treat them without deference to their gender. So for your stated purposes, discovering their gender without asking(...ew...) would not assist.

That said, the vast majority of players are men, and it's functional to simply assume any given player is a guy.

...Not that it should matter in how you interact.

Welcome to EVE,

I think I read somewhere that 95% of players are male, so I guess you have a 95% chance of being right if you treat them as such. I also agree with a previous poster that gender should make absolutely no difference to the way that you treat people, especially in an MMO.

That being said, I have met a couple of female players but they are pretty rare and very wary of being hit on by clumsy, pimply faced teenagers with no social skills.

This. I believe the statistic is actually 96-4 (and I'm part of the 96%).

I actually play an 'unremarkable looking' female avatar because if there's one thing about the internet, it's that there's a lot of creepy guys, and creepy guys underestimate women and largely ignore ones they don't find attractive. Being underestimated is a big advantage in a competitive game. If I was female IRL, I'd play that up even more, to weasel into corporations then steal everything and send an EVEmail saying something like "I just screwed you, and not in the way you wanted."

But really, people should just treat other players with the same degree of kid-gloves-off competitive respect whether they are a 44 year old businesswoman, a 28 year old stay-at-home dad, or a 16 year old high school student living with his parents.

The last numbers i knew where 96% male players but this might have changed (doubt its a huge change tho).

To the OP. In general everyone will refer to any player as a "he" until they have been corrected since the majority of the players are male. Sometimes you can see things that indicates that someone is a female (bio, way they talk and so on), but since this is EVE there is also a high possibility that these players are posing as a female to try and get free stuff from guys that are convinced that they might get something in return.

And trust me, for a question like this NCQA is much safer then GD since you would get trolled a lot for the question (not that its a bad question, it comes up on a semi regular basis).

Now for respect.
It dosent matter if your talking to a male or female, show respect no matter what. In general a female EVE players want to get treated the same way as the male EVE players (this means no censoring chat, being overly protective, avoiding swearing, no dirty jokes and similar).
For the free stuff.. Well for many female players they will just abuse you and laugh at you behind your back for constantly giving them stuff. Sure some like it, but trust me, chances that you will find a girl in EVE that falls madly in love with you because you give them ISK or similar is very very slim Lol

I should also mention that female EVE players are a lot more.... well lets just say most of them will see the gifts and such as an attempt to get something, and put you on their "potential stalker" list if your not careful. The average age in EVE is higher then in most other online games, which also means that you are not likely to run into a giggling teenager that goes "omg he gave me free ISK! He must think im soooo cute!" .
What you are more likely to see is that you give free stuff, she turns around and blows you up a few times and then blocks you Blink

Why, looonely and trying to figure who to hit on? Sad
Here is you're answer, no women play EVE. Well maybe a few but their husbands make them do it heh
Like my 5 semesters of electronics in my long lost high school days, 0 girls. Most people have account alts or multi accounts, chances are most of them have characters from both sexes ...just not at the same time. Looking to hit on chicks? WoW is that way ---->

im not denying that it'll be cool to meet some chicks here. hah! but lets be honest, expectations for getting anything in return is nil. im just curious. i dont hit on others online (well, maybe sometimes).

i also play WOW so i do know how these game works. just wanting to know about eve. trying to get my girl to join in too. so being able to know if there are fellow girls flying around might help ;)

This is very true. You can have played more or less every online game out there and still coming to EVE expecting to know or understand how EVE works based on that experience is a sure recipe for failure in most cases.

So do your self a favor and forget everything you learned in other online games and start fresh (and yes I have played WOW for a longer period of time).

And yes there are girls for your girlfriend to interact with. A private channel called WGOE that is for females only so female EVE players have a place to interact with each other without having to worry about guys that stalks girls that play online games Lol

Use EVE voice? Just have a good lie to tell when you give a reason for asking them to join your TS, as doing so simply to discern IRL gender is kinda disrespectful.

Fiodore Aeglaeca wrote:

Just curious? But wasn't this a "nagging" question that you felt was so important you'd make your first post about it, rather than anything actually related to the game of EVE itself?

Quote:

So you know how this works, and have known a ton of MMO players. You're an experienced gamer, but thought you'd make one of the first things you'd do in EVE be to come and ask this openly-sexist question anyway huh?

Might want to hope she doesn't encounter this thread then if she does join. Blink

Nightcrawler is one of my favorite posters here, and I appreciate that Q&A is a softer environment, but I have to disagree with two of their points: That this is not a stupid question and that this is asked regularly.

No offence OP, but unless you're an angsty teen I'm gonna call Troll thread.

WGOE? My experiences with that channel is that it is absolutely not female-only. In fact there seems to be a few 'exclusive' guys there also. Very nice ones though, of course. Who are only there to help and socialize, of course. Blink

Erica.

Quoting is a pain on the phone Lol

Your thinking about WGOE public which is open for both genders. Once in there you can request for a voice interview that you have to repeat every 6 months to get access so the female only channel.

And I will admit I blushed a bit when I read the favorite poster part Big smile

While the question is very. . Well let's just say that it makes me wonder why this is so important, it does come up once in a while, usually in relation to "why is there so many guys that use female avatars". However I think we have sort off similar thoughts on the OPs reason for the question.

But I still choose to answer on the of chance that I'm wrong and he is genuinely just curious. and if nothing else maybe someone else will be able to find information they can appreciate from reading the thread Smile

Yes it is, but I managed somehow! Big smile

I wasn't even going to post, but found people's patience with the OP unfair. Why? Because people with his agenda are a big reason many female players aren't comfy using female avatars and 'hide' behind a male one.

But maybe you're right and his curiosity is innocent. But honestly he would already know the answer to his own question. Blink

He's quite openly stated that he wants a method to determine RL player gender so he can flirt and openly treat players differently. But then backed away from that attitude as his posts progressed. Innocent or not I think he needs to be told that it's a cancerous attitude to have and that would likely be offensive to some females (and males) who come to immerse themselves in a game. Adultfriendfinder and RLC are that way ~>

Yes, you're correct about WGOE Public, I did indeed forget that there's two channels. Although in saying that, the guys hanging around the public maybe isn't the best look anyway though.

As for me? I'm whatever people want to believe I am. Smile And that's usually very predictable.

Oh, and don't blush Nightcrawler - the compliment is honest. Your posts are always patient and helpful.

I take avatars as picture on the wall. Some ppl put cars on the wall, some waterfalls. Many men put some more or less dressed women. Some player go so far in abusing their avatar, that they make their girlfriend talk to team speaker, when they do their scams...

So, whatever you see on the players wall - he is "he" or he is "it" . To be "it" is now officially legal in some european countries like German.

Another thing you'll find about almost every EVE thread is that the hostile posters rapidly crawl out of the woodwork, seemingly just for the sake of being hostile, angry and bitter.

Learn to examine the threads to tune these people out and only pick and choose posters who provide you with constructive, interesting responses. Note that sometimes people are saying things that you don't want to hear, but that doesn't mean they they are hostile trolls, just that they disagree with you. And if they are vets, they are most often 100% right.

If you take offense every time you see a hostile post, you will be offended quite a lot in this game because for some reason EVE seems to attract a much higher troll population than most MMO's. On the other hand there are also many genuinely helpful and friendly people like Nightcrawler 85 on the forums too.

I was going to leave this thread pass, but the inner forum warrior couldn't resist.

My question to the OP: What in the world does it matter if the person behind the keyboard is a male or female gamer?

In my honost opinion, treat people equally. The personality of a gamer is way more important then the gender, religion, nationality or what ever else you can think of.

I've got to know a good bit of female gamers in EVE, some who don't give a **** and are very open about it, some who are less comfortable about the general EVE player's stance towards female gamers and thus don't really make it public who they are. What I found out, if you respect people's choices and don't push anything upon them, you can make friends for (EVE) life, no matter who is behind the avatar.

As for replying with "he" / "him".
Because of the 96/4 ratio, unless known I estimate that the person I'm talking to is a male gamer.

As for lawyers and use in EVE.
I will just leave this person here, vets will understandP

As for "background check":
The closest you can get to it, is voice communication. But even that ain't foolproof (wife, gf, sister, mom).

Quote:
im not denying that it'll be cool to meet some chicks here.

Might want to change the wording of that

If this already set you off to biomass your character, boy will you be making a lot of new characters very often.

For EVE forums, this is a nice civil discussion.
Subscribe, post same OP in General Discussion, then you will find out that the posts in here were more then civil.
