Invention and getting data cores

I am trying to do the invention thing and hit a snag. Read the guide and it is very useful. But I want to make mechanical engineering data cores and I cant. I think I have the required skills. (Long term I intend to make tech 2 drones.)

Skills I have:

Science - Level 5
Mechanic, CPU Management, and Power Grid Management at level 5
Electronic Engineering – level 4
Mechanical Engineering – level 4
Laboratory Operation - Level 5
Research - Level 5
Research Project Management – level 4

I have standing with the Lai Dai Corp to get level 4 agents and have no problem making Electronic Engineering research points to make data cores, but not mechanical. My guess is Lai Dai is the issue. If that is the case how do I know which corp will let me research which data core?

One way to locate a suitable agent is to look at the description in the info box for the research agents that you are interested in working with. This will have all the information regarding the different fields that agent can research. An alternative is to search on EVE-Agents for R&D agents who work in your chosen field. There is also a Research Agent profitability calculator available which will help you to select the best agents for ISK output.

The question is not the corp. The question is the Agent. Every Agent offers different technologies for Research

Lai Dai Corporation owns three agents which offer Mechanical Engineering:

Itirikko Inishi - Level 1
Airatomon Kidurouchi - Level 2
Mislolen Issazainen - Level 3

I found them at this Website: Agent Finder which allow you to filter the agents very good.

If you use the InGame Agent Finder and filter for R&D and Lai Dai Corporation, you can click
on each Agents name in the list to get more Information about the Agent.
In Agents Information window tab you can see the Research Technologies the Agent offers.

My recommendation to you is to ignore datacore farming entirely, and post station specific buy orders for the datacores you need at your invention site. Pay 3% more than anyone else is paying in your region.

People involved in factional warfare (I believe) will often cash out their FW LP into datacores as they are a profitable, extremely liquid commodity (albeit with lesser payouts than some less liquid commodities). You should put them to work for you, and make your ISK out of the production process. Or the invention process, if you sell BPCs rather than building them.

Buy them.

Data core agents don't generate nearly enough. I think it's either 1 or two cores a day at best (L4 agent, L4/5 skill). An inventor can easily go through 10 or 20 a day.

Of course being a masochist, I would post buy orders where I can buy the data cores cheapest, then haul them to where I want to use them. Heck, consider paying someone else to haul for you. If you can't cover the costs with the profit of inventing things, you should probably just buy the final product and skip the make-work.

Don't try collecting all your ingredients on your own. This applies to all industry in EVE. Specialise your training and attention, otherwise you'll end up biting off more than you can chew and you'll start to feel that the game is a second job rather than a hobby or entertainment.

i already had standing for the datacore agents with my invention char so i got her to do datacores, but seriously unless you already have the standing dont bother. the payout is tiiiny, sure every little thing helps but the time it takes to grind the standing needed can be better spent doing something better.

If you are doing semi afk distribution missions anyway, sure do them for the corp you can get datacores for and you might as well get that tiny isk. but there is NO way you can supply yourself with the needed datacores, so as said above: buy orders.

I cant even remember when i last went to cash out the datacores, its too much of a pain in the ass to be worth it.

It really is pointless to gather materials for manufacturing yourself. It is much more efficient to just buy them.

I built my first Drake and Raven from materials I gathered myself. Looking back, boy was that slow and stupid. I also lost both and had to replace them.

If you have the standings, and the skills, you may as well have a research agent or two going.

This is purely for supplementary income, with no further investment, other than the time to pick them up once a quarter/year.

For actual use, as most people have been saying, buy them.

Is that all you use?

I had nine Kronos invention jobs going on the main yesterday. That's 576 datacores being used; well over 160 per day.

When I'm on leave from work and playing a lot more, I can use even more datacores than that.

I used to do my datacore purchases in Dodixie (I invent 5j away in a highsec station), but often found that I'd be 0.01 ISKed. Less people bother to 0.01 ISK an order that isn't at the hub yet there's still plenty of people that will cart stuff to you for the extra couple hundred thousand on a shipment of datacores.

Don't post regionwide orders for datacores or even decryptors unless you feel like spending a lot of time micromanaging courier contracts to get them moved.
