Why does the Venture Mastery Tree include Ice Harvesting?

So, this mastery and certificate system has been immensely helpful in figuring out what to do next and what skills I should be training to do what I want to do and fly what I want to fly. Lately, I've been flying a Venture, and I see that to get to level 3 the mastery asks for Ice Harvesting. Now, I'm pretty sure a Venture can't Ice Harvest, so what is the reason it's there? Does the skill boost some other attribute like gas or something?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

There is no stepping stone into ice mining like with ore mining.
My guess if that ccp added it just to lead people into the possibility of ice mining later

You are correct in that the ice mining skills do not benefit the ore mining capabilities of the venture

Perfect example of CCP not putting any thought into the Ship Mastery tool.

It's because of the way "ship mastery" actually works. There are 18 skill categories: Armor, Shields, Gunnery, Missiles, etc. Within each skill category, there are one or more "mastery" certificates. So the certificates actually show mastery in a particular skill set. Now look a particular ship, in this case the Venture. It's a "resource harvesting" ship (that's its mission) so in order to master the ship, you have to master "resource harvesting", which is an area under the Resource Processing skill category. The certificates aren't tailored to the ship, though, which is why you see Ice Harvesting as a requirement for "ship mastery" in the Venture.

One could argue that this is an error on CCP's part, but I think they had to consider a balance between tailoring the certificates for individual ship classes, and keeping the complexity down, at least for this first iteration. We might see a more "tailored" set of ship mastery certificates in future, or we might not, I don't know. But I think CCP did pretty good for a first (well, second, actually, but forget the original cert system) iteration.

essentially they need a basic mining and advanced mining masterys.

and we need a mining laser version of the ice harvester......it would be interesting to see what an ice mining venture can do

Mining, Gas Harvesting and Ice Harvesting masteries. But they'd be single-skill masteries. So at some point you need to trade off between one "Resource Harvesting" mastery to cover all resource collecting ships, adding gas and ice harvesting abilities to all resource collecting ships, or making do with a mastery that has a level 5 skill not directly relevant to the ship at hand.

Another example of this bizarre trade-off being made is the "Scanning" mastery for covert ops ships which includes "Survey 5" which is only used for moon survey probes.

Sadly, you will simply have to either accept that you will never get mastery level 4 for any mining ship until you train ice & gas harvesting (even if you never use them), and you will never get mastery level 4 for any covert ops ships until you train survey.

Some ships are easy to get mastery 5 for: blockade runners are my favourite. Others involve lots of training, such as Black Ops and super capitals.

Just remember that the Mastery system is intended as a guide, not an instruction manual.
