New nebulas, ruined potential

The new nebulas have potential, but like their predecessors they are ruined because of bad compression. They look like images from 1997. Instead of smooth color gradients, we get to see 8bit-like compression artifacts. The problem appears to be not so bad in empire where the space is colorful, but it jumps in our face in low/null sec, where there is color on a black space background, even more than on TQ.

The Cloud Ring seen from the Placid region looks like a tiled, striped 1kb 8-bit image. Go see for yourself CCP.

I know that what we have in our Sisi client is a badly compressed version of your original renders, made so there is no performance loss compared to TQ. The problem is that TQ backgrounds were built for dinosaur computers, it's time to rise the standards. This is not 2003 CCP, high-res backgrounds are CAKE for 1-2gb video cards running 2 maxed settings clients at over 100 FPS, and would make the whole game look a lot better.

Please stop thinking for those who run EVE on Vic-20 and Voodoo video cards before those who have good rigs and want to enjoy the game at its full potential. Best case you make high-res backgrounds an option in the settings menu, or even an optional download patch, and everybody's happy. It would be a shame to waste such (potentialy) good work.

The Nebulas are beatiful, however, the res needs to be turned up a bit and the color banding needs to be turned down.

That said, its not bad in some areas. Cistuvert looks amazing and I think Placid looks amazing as well.

They could use "optionality" in this too... that way everyone would be "happy"...

Esc Options:
Use highres nebula backgrounds (X)

Fixed.

Ditto, make it an optional download and optional setting for those who has more vram than 512MB to run this game with their hardware.

People nowdays have vram up to 2GB make use of it and let people have an option to get higher res nebulas and if possible textures.

Yea, I just hate the fact that EVE cant play up to graphical potential becasue the developers have to cater to players with inferior hardware.

I think it's only in certain areas this is happening, cause in other areas it is almost photo realistic

You need to just zoom in a bit to spot the low res. Or even try it at high resolution, it looks bad when running Eyefinity for example.

Then you will have people who bought a NETbook last year to play eve (aka morons) complain that they and all of their friends will quit if CCP discontinues to cater their old hardware.

Erm. How about making higher resolution backgrounds optional, just like high anti aliasing, resolution, effects, etc.?

Well i have it running at 1920 x 1200... i think having the option to turn it on or off would depend on how ingrained it is on the server side. If it's an arbitrary feature, then it shouldn't be hard to implement...

edit: On the other hand, i think it would be a very bad idea to have a new feature than devs have been working hard on to implement suddenly be able to turn off. It's a new, fantasic feature that has a lot of backing from CCP. It's at the front and centre of this expansion. Down the road, it may get revised.

Just my opinion :)

ot

I have 60 fps at 1280x1024 full details if i get into some smoky area or nebulae my frames drop under 10 ^^, i have only 512MB VRAM, but i wold like to see some grafic improvements for background. If i have some free money maybe i get a newer one. But the freaking Graphic Cards use so much Power.... nvm

/ot

I agree with ur suggestion, would be nice if we can get this

Just make it optional. Simple.

Well dont need a on/off switch just low med high. These are not serverside though otherwise you would need to download hell of data each time you jumped. This is client side and from what I speculate not hard to update or have an optional setting or download to have higher res.

Did I mention yet that the nebula's dark areas, the ones that are supposed to be unlit actually show the background stars?

Damn, someone messed up the alpha channels, ending up just turning black areas to transparent and now instead of dark dust obscuring stars they instead show everything behind.

Yeah, this is something I'm a little disappointed with as well. The nebulae should look as how they're shown in this video. They should definitely possess some depth to them.

It would be great if a someone on the dev team could inform us if anything is happening with the nebulae at present.

Completely agree. The 'edge of galaxy' nebula visible in 0.0 is especially bad at displaying banding.

CCP t0rfifrans, please make that 200MB optional package available for highres nebulae!

Edit: added the link to the picture demonstrating the banding

i also vote for the optional high res nebulae. might as well offer it if the PC's can take it.

Pretty sure it would be much larger than that, but I have no issues with this whatsoever.

Exactly, it would be appreciated if CCP could let us know they are aware of this 'problem' and what they think of it. Please!
