Mining barge question

Hi guys, I'm about a 1M SP noob and I've been doing some solo high sec mining lately in my venture. By the end of the week I should have completed the training required for a mining barge, and am planning on buying one.

So my question is which one do most people prefer? I'm leaning towards the Retriever due to the size of the cargo hold, but I really don't understand all the stats well enough to make a very good comparison of the three. Any tips on distinguishing between, operating, and/or fitting them would be greatly appreciated.

I mostly plan on staying in the high sec areas and solo mining for now. I realize my needs may change later, once I build up my SPs and join a corp, but for now I'm just doing my own thing in the 'safety' of high sec. Thanks in advance for your help.

The Retriever/Mackinaw are the most popular ones because of their cargo bay sizes. The only reason I would use the Covetor/Hulk is if I'm mining in a fleet.

When Bon Scott died and he appeared before St. Peter at the gates of Heaven, St. Peter looked at his record and told him he couldn't get in. Just then, God screams at Peter, "Let him in, Karen Carpenter is driving me nuts. I want to hear some music with balls. We'll haggle over the paperwork later." At least I hope that's what happened.

Retriever/Mackinaw is the way to go then, if your need changes later you should have the isk to change ship depending on what you need

Procurers are much harder for miner euthanists (such as myself) to see properly destroyed.

I support the New Order and CODE. alliance. www.minerbumping.com

(Tech 1 variant)/(Tech 2 variant)

Procurer/Skiff: The tankiest of the barges... they are made primarily to survive unfriendly encounters with others (or buy time at the very least).
These ships mine the least and have a moderate-small ore bay.

Retriever/Mackanaw: Possesses the biggest "belly" of the barges... they are made more for "solo" miners who cannot count on hauling support and/or don't want the inconvenience of warping to and from station/drop-off point.
These ships are the second most productive and have a light tank.

Coveter/Hulk: The most gluttonous of the barge line... these ships have the highest mining rate of any barge and over time can suck down entire belts.
These ships have very light tank and very small ore bay though... meaning that it absolutely requires support to function properly.

Get the one you can afford to replace entirely (ship and modules).

Procurer and Retriever have the same yield. Procurer has better tank, thus less likely to be ganked.

Procurer and retriever (same cor the T2 versions) have close to similar yields due to hull bonuses.

The maindifference is the ore hold vs tank.
Aka..retriever is food for gankers while the procurer is usually left alone as CONCORD is mostly faster there then you can kill it.

Personally I would pick the procurer of them all. They are cheap to replace just in case and you are more likely left alone by gankers. And a dead mining barge doesnt make you any money..

EDIT:

Retriever

Role Bonus:
50% bonus to Strip Miner yield
33.33% reduction in Ice Harvester Duration and capacitor use

ergo: Each strip miner works like 1.5 strip miner. For a total yield that is the same as 3 "unbonused" strip miners

Procurer

Role Bonus:
200% bonus to Strip Miner yield
66.66% reduction in Ice Harvester Duration and capacitor use

ergo: The strip miner works like 3 strip miners. Thus has a yield that is the same as 3 "unbonused" strip miners.

Bzzzt! Does not compute!

200% bonus = 1 * (1 + 200%) = 1 * (1 + 2) = 1 * (3) = 3

All Mining Barges and Exhumers are normalized at 3 strips. The Covetor and Exhumers have yield bonuses above this.

Yeah...Pre-morning-coffee derp

200% bonus means 3 times normal yield.

Fixed it.

This,
usually the procurer.
don't let the 1 strip miner fool you it got 200% bonus so it's same like 3 strips.

but proc can be bought for as low as 9 million isk and it tanks like a boss.

Even for hi sec I would choose a procurer, and for low or null ONLY a procurer :)
