Make Smartbombs Smart

Smartbombs shouldn't just damage everything, because that's stupid and not smart.

By default, what gets damage should depend on your safety settings, so with full safety, you don't damage other players or anything that calls CONCORD on you and similar with the other safety settings.

On top of that a script can be applied to filter targets by standing. A red script will make the bomb only damage targets with negative standings but not blue or neutral and a blue script will make the bomb damage every target that isn't blue. Your own corporation and alliance counts as blue, of course.

This way smartbombs are finally usable in highsec, fleets and even missions. No longer blowing apart your own drones or that friendly logi frigate and that officer smartbomb will finally be able to get rid of those scram frigs in missions without making you a target for a lolmail.

Only down side would be the increased server load for checking through the targets and decide if they are qualifying for damage or not.

dummy bombs are known as free falling bombs with no guidance systems to direct it more accuratly towards its target.

I'd be interested in seeing hitting cloaked ships with smartbombs not constitute an act of aggression. But smartbombs should hit everything in their radius. EVE is dystopian, it seems more fitting that people could feel free to roam about highsec blasting smartbombs a short distance from other people with no fear of reprisal. The only reason you get in trouble for hitting a non-cloaked ship is you have no proof you didn't do it on purpose. You hit a cloaked ship, you have an alibi (even if you really did hit it on purpose!)

I think smartbombs should actually be dumber. As in, they shouldn't leave a huge cloud of phat lootz for people sitting with 3 BSes around a lowsec gate twiddling their thumbs after pressing F1-F8.

Blanking signatures doesn't seem to work, so this is here.

The problem with the name is that these aren't guided in any way. They aren't launched, they emit from your ship.
So calling them smart bombs implies a certain level of AI or control around them.

Which currently they don't have, they are just pulse weapons. So either they need renaming to remove this confusion the
Smart term implies, or changing so they actually are smart.

I don't really care which occurs, though I'd like to have the later for personal use, but one of the two should happen for consistency to avoid trapping people into things.

I think they are called Smartbombs because in order to use them you have to be smart.

If smartbombing doesn't hurt friendlies you just made pipe bombing so much easier. Bad idea

How about just changing the way smartbombs work with the safety system?

Move the damage application to the end of the cycle, but calculate what the damage will be applied to at the start. If there's something your safety setting wouldn't allow you to damage, the cycle is interrupted and no damage is applied.

Or a slightly more flawed, EVE-like system: it checks if it would hit something, decides whether or not to pulse, if chooses yes, it pulses and THEN chooses targets. The lag time allows the system the chance of failure. You have to be set to yellow to use them in empire space, and carry the risk of flagging yourself red with them. A disclaimer will pop up every time you try to activate them without a weapons timer that was caused by your smartbombs, unless you click the checkbox to have it stop telling you.
