So after my home server went up in smoke, I am looking to use a VPS.
Unfortunately I have little knowledge as to what I should buy.
Do I need to have EVE run on the VPS or am I able to use the VPS internet connection as the first point to the internet as I was with my home setup?

You can set up a VPN from pretty much anywhere to anywhere, but the question is why?
From the sounds of it your connection is fine... (otherwise why would you have a home server?) so what would you gain by playing EVE through a VPN?

I gain by being able to play it at the college i get stuck at regularly and as I said my server died this morning.
Apparently one of the power cables caught in the CPU fan and it cooked.
So I am looking at other options beyond buying a new server

more information on gaming vpns

that said, i'd like to mention something:
there are several gaming companies which will ban you and your accounts when using one of those vpns. That is because the most common use case for vpns in mmo is fraudulent behaviour or botting.

I don't know CCP's stance on that, but i wouldn't recommend using one.

Digging through it seems to be on par with isoboxer, not endorsed, but dont cause trouble and it will be tolerated.

Also i got it working for an SSH tunnel to my vps now, apparently the vpn uses 1096 and the firewall seems to cut off above 1000
So I cant get internet.
