How many total player characters have been created in EVE Online?

Probably several characters are being created each hour in EVE, but roughly how many characters are there in EVE?

You can't really base this off of subscription numbers because you can have 1-3 characters per account, and subscriptions are only for active accounts and not inactive accounts or trial accounts. It also probably doesn't count official CCP accounts. And it definitely won't take into account characters that have been biomassed.
But I'm curious. What's the actual number of characters that have been created since the beginning of EVE Online?

The eveboard statistics page reports five million. I don't know if that's all the characters in EVE, though? Tweet Chribba?

The last official number I have from CCP is that they have around 12 million characters in their database, both active/inactive/deleted/etc - the 5 million I have on [eb] is just the characters I have "found".
