Hello Big smile,

I would like to suggest minor change in drones aggression mechanics - made them engaging automatically hostile craft after deployment from drone bay.
For now drones after deployment are not attacking any ship who already engaged us without targeting them, It''s not game breaker but it doesn't add up, with drones in "aggressive" mode Roll.

Drones are dumb. There's a lot of things that need done to fix them.

CCP should be getting to their UI/AI "Soon(tm)"

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

It's not bad AI, CCP designed them this way so they are not a completely automated weapon capable of destroying ships without ever locking them. Drones do not have AI, it is the ship that is controlling them, and if the ships AI cannot identify an enemy, nor can the drones.

A huge part of how drones work, according to the chronicles, etc, is based on the controlling ship. That's why there is drone bandwidth maximums, why ship-fitted modules can speed up or increase damage/tracking of drones. The drones themselves have very few brains. So it makes sense that when released they would just derp around space until given an order or until their very simple AI detects that something has started attacking you.

Also, from a balance perspective, the only main weapons system that can shoot without having a lock is the FoF missile system, which is not only gimped in terms of damage but also in terms of knowing what to shoot. Giving drones the ability to automatically shoot something without having to lock first is a bad idea.

People seem to be forgetting that if drones are out BEFORE the shooting starts, they need no lock.

It's if you launch mid fight they need an initial target and then, again, they can proceed lockless after that first engagement.

I'm in two minds, it's a weird situation.

This. Since drones already have this capability it would make sense to make it consistent. If CCP is trying to prevent drones from attacking targets without locks they have failed, and if they are trying to prevent drones killing rats while AFK they have also failed. So either they should prevent all drone locks without a main lock, or make drones seek engaged targets on launch as well.
