I've been hanging around both lately. Null is nice and quiet most of the time but low sec seems to have more sites.. or maybe i've been to the wrong kind of null? (0.0/-0.1, afaik they go lower too, is that significant?) Which one do you think is more profitable?

I do run the combat sites when i feel safe enough (in my cheapo navy vexor) but cant really do nullsec plexes with my skills just yet.

Null goes down to -1.0 so its sounds like you are in the worst areas of Null.

Sites are a bit random and often an lower run rate will decrease the number of sites spawned (well they pool for longer in the very deep null areas )

Low sec has lower combat sites, 4/10 and 6/10 vs the 8/10 - 10/10 of null sec. While low sec complexes may drone pirate cruiser BPC instead of Battleship BPC, they also drop cruiser class mods vs Battleship mods. While not always as valuable, they are still on the high end as many of those cruiser mods are what people really want on all their T3 and HACS. Demand is high making the value high.

Depending on the site and the potential drops, many of those low sec complexes are nothing to turn your nose up at.

Sec status has 'nothing' to do with where combat sites spawn.

Don't overlook the fact that invulns and EANMs drop from 4-6/10s -- in low sec. That sometimes means that 6/10s have a higher average payout than even 10/10s.

Of course 6/10s spawn in null as well so there's that.

I'm basing my comments solely on combat sites...

It really depends on your own current situation, the ships you fly, and the particular regions you're in. You can make the blanket case that for a given faction, low is better than null or vice versa, but that's based solely on rewards. There's also the fact that the sites themselves are easier/harder depending on faction and level of site (also considering your ship choice).

In null, things tend to be much quieter, which can be very nice (dont have to worry about dscans). You have to balance that against the danger in getting to your site. On the other hand, sites in null have much more total EHP, meaning you have to squeeze more DPS out of your ships, and blitzing/skipping only helps out a little bit. In low, traveling could be either safer or more dangerous, the loot may be better, and you may be able to finish the sites quicker. You also have easiier access to stations for refit or to ditch loot for later pickup. This comes with increased local presence, however.

On the whole, with the exception of a few notorious lowsec sites, null sites are harder (or at least take much longer) and require you to have higher skills and a better fit/setup. Consequently, in null its more important to have a good ship vs that particular rat type (ishtar vs nullsec guristas is trivially easy except for 2-3 sites). Navy vexor looks like a good ship for lowsec/hisec, but I wouldn't consider it a ship for nullsec. The bigger drone bay, drone control range, and sentry drone bonus make the ishtar absolutely superior for null.

But again, so much more depends on where you plan to be exploring, which two regions you're comparing, and who lives there and what the competition/locals will be like.
