Simulated singleplayer with optional multi-sharded and instanced multiplayer components, and, indeed optional everything else as well, using twitch mechanics compared to a non-consensual free-for-all single-sharded player-run sandbox MMO with RTS and grand-strategy gameplay. It is far closer to the X series and Elite and Freelancer than it is to EVE.

So no. Not even close to the same genre. Just a similar theme with tons of background processing to make up for the lack of actual interaction.

“Scifi spaceship” is not a genre — it's just a thin (and redundant) thematic coating.
Speaking of coating, it sure is a Chris Roberts game. Was that the TCS Concordia they've pulled out of the scrap heap? P

In this developer blog post, Roberts laments the need for multiple servers to handle large number of players, but explains that Star Citizen will not be divided up into shards, but instead follow a megaserver similar to EVE Online.

Probably not

Quote:
While the main universe will allow players to interact freely, localized instances for battles or space station interiors will be dynamically populated by the system based on the other players nearby. If you step into a bar on a station, Star Citizen will first attempt to fill it with friends on the station, then players it deems similar to you, such as those looking for a group.

Anyway - pointed out the part completely ruining it for me.

I'll most likely give it a go just because I've played the entire wing commander series, but it's not really the same genre as eve.

Considering the trailer: That's most likely as far from actual gameplay as Eves trailers are.
You know... [morons.](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gjOx65yD5A)

Agreed, even though some people will choose...

It's not one at the expense of the other,

It's that EVE development, expansion, and gameplay might take some ques from things going on in other games.

You can't keep shifting stats and releasing small gameplay iterations forever.

There will be a shinier ball to play with sooner or later if the one you are using doesn't get polished enough.

Eve rarely has 50k anymore. It's between 20 and 40k now

I just turned into an egg, did I level up? I spent an hour trying to salvage a wreck, when in local a guy said "Stop it, this is my Tempest, I was AFK"

This may well be the most annoying topic I've seen on these forums. Partly because SC and EVE aren't really in the same category and they're not really competing with each other, but also because of the pretentious, letter-like way the topic has been written.

Good job, I'll probably remember this thread at least for a while.

On September 29, 2013 at 18:25 eve had 49,460 players simultaneously logged in. That's yesterday, btw.

SC is pretty much a instanced, dogfighting, single player game with the option of a (probably rented) private server, Only 100 star systems (even if they have 1000 it wont touch eve). Not only that optional pvp and $200 ships... its got nothing on eve

im going to get it though, its going to be good, but just for the single player stuff so i dont have to p2w and when i want a change of pace.

Roleplayers and furries are using SC to try and trick CCP into wasting more time and resources on WiS.

EVE is a game about spaceships and there's an enormous amount of work to do on the in-space gameplay before players (or developers) are ready to sacrifice it for a totally new type of gameplay - CCP Rise

Ahm... again, and running at risk of soundling as nitpicky as Tippia here (sowy Blink), SC is NOT p2w, everything, aside from the actual acces to the game (and additional character slots), can be bought with ingame credits. Also, private servers will not be hosted by CIG and will not cost any rent...

The instancing (seamless transition between multiplayer and singleplayer), and the 100 star systems (even though those will be much more detailed then EVE's) are true.

Finally: If there will be any direct competitor to EVE, I'm more inclined to believe it will be Elite Dangerous... 400 bil stars, complex/dynamic politics/economy system, etc.

Is there a specific word or phrase for redefining words to win an argument? Tippia, I feel like you should now what the name for that is.

In most circles Science Fiction in itself is a genre. Spaceship or Spaceopera might be considered sub-genres.

"non-consensual free-for-all single-sharded player-run sandbox MMO with RTS and grand-strategy gameplay" is more a niche than a genre, way too specific.

Anyway, I agree that there is room for both. They will likely be competition for at least some peoples dollars, and perhaps more importantly time (when and if the embryonic SC project actually delivers).

Agreed with the OP that it should signal to CCP that they may need to start thinking about stepping up their game, so to speak.

The only end-game content in EVE Online is the crap that makes you rage quit.

And the full release of SC is projected to happen in 2015, and it's liable to get pushed back again and again, as has already happened repeatedly.

It's probably the best single example of Parkinson's law in the current gaming industry, i.e. that work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.

Yawn...

Wake me when you can actually play the game fully as promised and not just donate money to someone's dream.

Maybe in 5 or more years (if they are still around) they might catch up to EVE, but I guess we are going to have to endure all the hysteria about what it might become in the meantime.

There's a million angry citizens looking down their tubes..at me.
