Ok after spending all my time training missles, I have decided to train & use turrets. Missles were quite simple- lock, check your in range, and shoot.

But turrets are a hole different animal. Something that I have being experimenting with now for the last week or so.

But a few questions I have not really found an answer to: how falloff works. I know that turrets have an optimal range that they have the best tracking and damage application, but the words eve uses are somewhat misleading.

For instance, it says the "optimal range" of the turret is "within 19km" does that exclude tracking? is that just the optimal range for the weapon itself?

and the "within" part is another confusing thing. It makes me think any range within 0-19km is the optimal range, because it says "within 19km"

so then its a question of will the weapon do max damage of anything from 0-19km in a perfect world? is it just an issue of tracking that influences targets closer then the "optimal" range?


So if that isn't the case, and weapon optimal range/damage DOES falloff in both directions, is there a point to get skills such as the sharpshooter gunnery skill, if you are a close brawler? It seems pulse lasers have a hard enough time hitting targets that are really close, and getting that skill any higher would just make it worse. However if it is impossible for a weapon to be "too close" and there is only a long range falloff, it would lead me to believe that Motion prediction is the key to hitting close targets and im just complicating things way too much.

Ive done experiments with EveHQ and asked a few people I have expected to have a good explination on how turrets work, and I can not get a definitive answer anywhere :p I hope I can get them answered in full now because its been bugging me for a while now :p

Turrets are quite similar to missiles actually, except that turrets do damage instantly while missiles apply damage with the missiles.

Turrets use their tracking to hit stuff, while Missiles have and explosion radius and an explosion velocity.
Turrets do their full damage within the optimal range, and hit all the way out to 2x falloff + optimal. Missiles just have to have their missiles fly to their target and hit.

For the is it possible for guns to get too close?
You've probably heard the term to get under the guns.
What that term describes is that you're small enough and fly enough around your target to not get hit by the guns because it can't track you.

Both systems are based on your targets signature radius.

Turrets can apply full damage to said target if you can master your transversal/Angular Velocity (same as Transversal just in a way to compare your turrets tracking). It's just tracking that's hard.

Missiles can only apply as much damage the missiles you use allow them to, depending on your targets size.

Not really no, even if you can track it your you will still get bad hits, unless your target is massively bigger than your turrets signature resolution.

e.g orbiting a battleship at 500m with medium guns will make sure you hit constantly.
orbiting a cruiser at 500m with large guns will make it almost impossible to hit, especially if you're using lasers.

edit:
Pulse: be at 5k ish within your optimal
Blasters: orbit just within your optimal (like 200-300 members within it)
Projectiles: No matter what fight in the fall-off depending on what you fight and what you fly.
