Dev blog: Email verification and you

Well that was unexpected; I hit the verify email button in account management, and it disconnected me from EVE, and now says:

"Trial account EVE-SSO-CONNECTION has not been activated!

Please check the E-Mail address provided at account creation for an activation E-Mail."

...on login.

Waiting for the mail now, takes a while to filter through the spam filters... not exactly what was expected though...

.... and following the email arriving, I can log back on again.

That's a bit harsh during the verification period!

Yay! Thanks for this.

One quest though, is this going to lead to the ability to delete old trial accounts? I have like 5 of the things that I'm not using (they were created at various times when my subscription was lapsed to keep in touch with in game friends or to try out updates to the NPE and I would like to get rid of them

So something isn't right here.

I verified my other account and was promptly permabanned. As in the verification caused my ban. I'm completely at a loss here for what's going on.

Update

Alright, so CCP support was thankfully quick to respond on this one.

"It appears you selected the link on the verification email that rejected the email authorization. We have now lifted the ban on your account "

So whatever you do, do not click the second link in the verification email, which happens to look identical to the first link.Shocked

The ONLY thing I beg you to NEVER NEVER NEVER do is to copy the absolutely craptastic way other MMOs do: every time you want to play you must receive an email and click it (or enter a key code) else you can't play.

If you'll do this I will immediately unsub, I had so many troubles with that braindead "solution" that I go nuts just at thinking you could ever implement it.

Thanks for this.

Uh, if it means that in case of a hack it will show the hacker all my account names, I will not use this. (Not that I think I will ever be hacked, I use a secure password, keep my computer updated and don't visit bad EVE sites, so I'm pretty safe. But still.)

And I hope you realize that people change their email addresses all the time and lose access to their old ones, and even forget that they changed address and didn't tell you. You just created a lot of work for your customer support department...

Nice, but the confirmation email (at least the German one) is a bit annoying to use:

- The activation link isn't clickable.
- The activation link is right inside text, so copying it is even harder.

Could you add a paragraph right before and after the link and make it clickable in the HTML version of the mail?

We have now deployed a fix for this. The email is now more readable and the links are clickable in any email client, also the verify link is now in bold. Big smile

Does this mean I can type the email of a friend an see his username or even if he has more accounts? I think nobody uses a seperate email only for EVE or much less for every account.

EDIT:
I had my second account showing there. Then I changed it to a friends email* and back again and now it shows another of my accounts and a random one that I never heard of.

*he verified it

I have 5 main accounts, each of them has separate email i only use for them. helps with safety in case I ever get hacked, which I never do ofc... Due to me being careful and all.

Have yet to see one doing that excessively. Most limit this to IP subnets, e.g. only if the first two or three numbers in your IPv4 address change you have to "confirm" logging in. This can be a bit annoying for those with dynamic IPs but after a few days everything is fine usually. :)

I noticed when making a new account CCP demands that I have cookies enabled.
What would happen if I tried to proceed with cookies disabled?
Will something bad happen if I delete all my cookeis now I verified my email?

Furthermore, can we have Power of Two accounts automatically set as verified if the account that made them was verified?

I'm honestly disappointed to hear this, I've actually been hoping CCP would update EVE's secruity a bit more. With all the time and money people pump into their accounts the best security feature you guys could come up with is list one of my characters names....Seems a little pathetic compared to the security of most MMO's nowadays.
With CCP updating EVE's running spec's and overhualing EVE in general to bring it more in line with modern MMO's, then this security update, with the talk of the email verification being the first step in additional security features I was sure CCP would be introducing an authenticator of some description.

I would love to see EVE update it's security and use something like (if not) Google's authenticator. I have it activated on my Guild Wars 2 account. With GW2 its completely optional, so you cater to those who hate change or mild inconvenience (or a blinding violent hatred of numbers or some such) and those who like to protect their investments. And it only promts you when you login from a different network or when theres suspicious actrivity (someone else trying to login into your account from a different network).

In any case it is nice to see even small steps to increase security.

Edit: Oh and it gave me a bit of chuckle to hear that clicking the wrong link got your account banned. EVE, ruthless as ever. ^_^

Since you already are able to match multiple accounts via email address:

Please create a new feature, so that all my characters - independent of which account they are on - are able to access each others hangars. If you are like me and have multiple characters in the same region I often find myself missing items because they are in the hangar of another character. It's super annoying to relog, create a contract, relog again and accept the contract, only to find out that I forgot something and have to go through the same annoying process again. Please allow my characters to access each others hangars and make the game more fun and less annoying for me.

I was in a meeting with some fine folks who confirmed to me that the secondary link that I lovingly refer to as the self destruct button, will be removed :).

Anyone who's pressed it or is having any other kind of problem with E mail verification, please contact Customer Support and they'll sort you out with urgency.

You would not be able to proceed.

As a web developer all my browsers are set up to delete all cookies the moment I close the browser (testing and debugging of websites would be impossible without this). So, yes... you can delete your cookies once you've logged out of your account.

Here's a question for added security:

Have you ever tried the Google Authenticator? You can use your Android or Apple or even Blackberry phone to provide an additional 6-digit code..

Here's some more info: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/1066447?hl=en

Hope you can offer something like that one day.
