EVE General Discussion

So I have been reading some of the stories on teh various news websites about Eve. Like The Mittani and Evenews24. And I watch the Null Sec maps every few days because I am new, it fascinates me, and I really like this game and want to be a part of it.

But I digress....

My question is who are the Southern Russians? I am assuming they are the allainces that have recently taken the south like Darkness, Darkness of despair, Coven etc. Are those the Russians? When I am reading about corps either in game or on other sites, how can you tell if they are Russian or American or Antartican or whatever?

Like I said, I am new and I am just learning about everything. I am trying to read up on the history of everything just so I can get a general idea of who the players are, where they come from, and where they are going.

Any other info on some of the other corps would be awesome too. Like I have a pretty good idea of who all the CFC is and the now defunk Dinner Squardron etc. What other coalitions are there?

The Southern Russians are to distinguish them from Eastern Russians (If you recognise names like SOLAR and Legion of xXDeathXx, those are "Eastern Russians"), and on the excellent link Ammzi gave you, Southern Russians = Stain Wagon.

As to the nationalities of various alliances, Russians/East Europeans are probably the most iconic linguistic/ethnic defined group. They are many, over many groups, and have defined EVE history (Look up the Drone Russian/Region Forces/Federation) several times in the past.
Other linguistic groups exists, but have to a lesser degree made linguistic alliances with impact.
The Russians are a catch-all phrase for Eastern European / Cyrilic alphabet linguistics.
I can give you examples like HUN Reloaded or Vera Cruz Alliance, but that's the gist of it.

As for other coalitions, there are currently 5 "big", depending on definition.

-CFC, led by Goonswarm.
-ProviHolders, led by Curatores Veritatis Alliance.
-N3, main names Nothern Coalition. and Nulli Secunda.
-NeoSoCo/Stainwagon/Southern Russians, Darkness of Despair.
-The ex-Dinner Squadron, Initiative. and friends.

Other groups, like EMP and ASH in the north, PL, and MANY NPC sov. groups can be much harder to get a firm definition on.
This is politics&war, though, and you know how reliable those people are.
