Penalty's for stacking.

Now I understand that stacking penalty for stacking the same type of module on your ship. ( to prevent anyone being able to have a 100% resistance to something ) However, does this apply to the main type of module or the specific modules. I.E.

Does stacking 2 of each Basic Energized EM Membrane and a Basic Energized Themic Membrane does this then have penalty of 4 modules or do they count as 2 ( 2 for EM and 2 for Thermal? )

Also does this apply for the rigs as well, since I was looking for a PvE set up which involed two EM, Thermal low slots and a rig each for them as well, I understand that this could count as a definite 3, but does the whole lot count as a 6?

It applies to the stat being effected.

If you have a plating for EM, therm, and kin and also had rigs of each of those resistances the. Your stacking penalty will be two levels deep on those three resistance types.

You'll only get a stacking penalty if you modify the same stat more than once.

For example, you can have 4 Energized Adaptive Nano Membranes that will receive stacking penalties on resistance to EM, Thermal, Kinetic, and Explosive. You could also fit 1 Energized Membrane of each damage type without penalty to any.

Heat Sinks, Gyrostabilizers, Magnetic Field Stabilizers, and Ballistic Control Systems (Weapon Upgrades) provide bonuses to Rate of Fire and Damage. If you fit 1 Magnetic Field Stabilizer and one Hybrid Burst Aerator, you'd get a stacking penalty to Rate of Fire.

Offensive modules similarly face stacking penalties. Two unscripted Tracking Disruptors will reduce your target's tracking speed and optimal range by a lesser amount than one Tracking Disruptor scripted for tracking speed and the other scripted for optimal range.

Always remember that the module with the highest value always gets calculated first when calculating stacking penalties. If you fit a Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane and a Armor Thermic Hardener, the stacking penalty for resistance to Thermal damage will be applied to the EANM but not the Hardener.

As people above have said, it's stat-based, not module-based. Only bonusing a stat multiple times gets stacking penalty applied. In your example, EM resistance and Thermal resistance are about as pertinent to each other as agility is to sensor strength (or something).

Also, note that stacking penalty sometimes does not apply. The most common instance is when a module provides a flat, additive advantage, not a multiplicative advantage. As in, adding another armor plate (which is an additive +bonus to your hit points) is not stacking penalized, while adding a resist module (which is a %bonus), is.

Certain items and stats are also exempt. For example, Damage Control units bonus shield, armor, and structure resistance, and the bonus they give does not trigger stacking penalties. Another example are the effects of fleet boosts, or combat boosters (drugs). Though these may bonus the same stat that other modules bonus, stacking penalty does not apply. For example, the resist bonus given by a Damnation boosting your armor ship will not suffer stacking penalty if you also have an Energized Adaptive Nano Plating II equipped.

Any modules/effects that say they are stacking penalized in their description are stacking penalized. Any that do not say that... still might be. Ask around.

As an unrelated point: try to stay away from the Basic membranes (and "basic" modules in general). They have lower skill/fitting requirements, but are pretty much the worst versions of those modules available -- worse than even the base tech 1 variant. Instead of a Basic Energized Thermic Membrane, go for an Energized Thermic Membrane I (or II), or if you have CPU issues, a Thermic Plating I (or II).

When talking about resistances there's also one module that isn't stacking penalized in any situation: Damage Control II.
It increases all structure resistances from 0% to 60% and gives resistance bonus to armor and shield vs. all damage types.
And all of that for minimal capacitor usage.

Actually damage control does have stacking penalty with one module: reactive armor hardener (unless they changed this recently)

What I was going for was 2 EM and 2 Thermic.
