Hello! I'm new to the game, and I have a few questions...
1. I bought the game on Steam. Do I forever need steam to login, or can I download the client separately and just use that? If so, how?
2. What are Alts and what are they used for?
3. Why is running multiple clients useful?

1. Because you used steam yes you must use steam.
2. Alts are separate characters usually on separate accounts.
3. Allows for you do do more thing and doing things more easily.

Always willing to help all you have to do is ask, though if you're in the other fleet I may not help the way you want. Just a heads up. Pub Channel: Lost Souls Trading Post

You can also have 2 alts on your single account.
You cant dual box obviously, and cant train more than 1 at a time without spending 'PLEX', but they are handy for having a pilot do different jobs like hauling or trading.

no. Only 1 logged in at a time per account.

Not true. Because Steam is so borked for Eve I downloaded the client separately and voila, no problems.

1. Steam question was answered.
2.&3. Alts are secondary characters, either on the same account or on separate accounts. They are normally specialised characters that may supplement or compliment your main character depending on what you train. For example, a good second account alt would be a scout alt, flying cov ops or cloaky recons, a same account alt may just be a simple hauler to bring you stuff in low security space if you have bad sec status, or a market alt placed in a trade hub where you only need to log on once or twice a day to update orders, buy stuff etc.

Multiple clients mean you can control 2 or more characters at the same time. Same account alts cannot be accessed via multiple clients. If you wanna use 2 characters or more at the same time, you need to have separate accounts and launch the EVE client multiple times.

Dunno. Not a Steam user.

"Alternate Characters." They come in 2 flavors...

1. separate account alt.
2. the "same account" alt.

The first requires a separate client instance and subscription. It can be used at the same time as your main character.

The second only requires to use of one of your other character slots on the same account. You cannot use it at the same time as your "main character" and you cannot train it at the same time as your "main character" (unless you use a PLEX via the account Manager).

As stated before... you can use characters in tandem with each other. This allows you to...

- "scout" ahead with your alt (preferably with a cheap ship) to identify any potential threats to your other character (who may or may not be using/carrying valuable stuff).
- increase your effectiveness in an activity (using the alt to haul stuff while you mine... or scout/heal/support your combat ship).
- bypass certain mechanics (people who go "outlaw" must rely on others to get supplies for a decent price. Rather than do that they can train up an alt to go shopping for them).

You can also use alts to perform different activities with different groups that may or may not be mutually exclusive.
For example; I know a guy who is a director of a major mining corporation on one account and an "elite" PvP/ganker on another. He uses the money he earns on the miner character to fund his PvP activities and uses his PvPer character to kill any threat to his mining character (or people in his own corporation who annoy him).

Steam user here, I just run the direct exe file, its buried in the steam files in the programs folder, I bought it before they integrated the login though so not sure if something changed if you bought it after.
