Aurum/NeX IS automatically bad

I originally started this as a reply to one of those apologist threads about how the nex is totally awesome and that we basically shouldn't make CCP angry by bitching about it being expanded to more "vanity" only items. Decided it needed to be another thread.

The NeX *is* automatically bad. Why? because it adds no gameplay, Why should we not expect such things to be added as additional gameplay, add blueprints, add LP options, or something else completely. The NeX is a blatant attempt to milk more money out of a player base who has already put up with a beta level quality game for years. Hilmar is wrong when he says that "the industry is moving to free to play models", a bunch of poor WoW clones moved to that model after failing to compete with WoW itself. That shouldn't be a surprise, compared to WoW they have nothing to offer. EvE however does, the only reason people play this game is because it is fundamentally different, and there are many things in eve that are simply not available in other mmos. CCP would do well to remember that they serve a specific niche, trying to chase some general group by softening up the game, or overly milking their existing loyal fanbase, would both be very short sighted mistakes.

Skins are "vanity items" so we shouldn't care right? Wrong, "Vanity" can be made to mean almost anything, vanity content can have plenty to do with gameplay and content. Would you like it if when its developed, everything in WiS is Aurum related? Aurum to rent and decorate your establishments, hire npcs, Aurum for ship skins, new gui themes, graphics options.

CCP makes millions every month of subs, on top of more or less ignoring Eve in favor of their pet projects for the last two years. The playerbase needs to continue to demand the focus that Eve deserves, and call out bullshit "features" like the NeX whenever they are presented.

One last note aimed at CCP itself. You are in a position right now where you are actually offering something different than other mmo's. You succeeded because of that, and only that, EvE remains to this day buggy, slow, and unpolished. When Eve was released calling it "Alpha" quality would have been a major complement. Understanding that your success is derived from a niche group of players, and continuing to cater to that niche, is hugely important for your continued success. Don't loose sight of that, don't risk it by taking pot shots at your central community like you did with the NeX.

What have I created!?
I must burn it! Burn it with fire! Flame it, if you will.
In Shakespearean. Why not?

Thou fusty flap-mouthed miscreant, a dull and muddy-mettled rascal! Thy mother is a rump-fed ronyon, capable only of being a odiferous motley-minded harpy! I abhor thou, paunchy tickle-brained mumble-news! Thou art as loathsome as a toad and are as a candle, the better burnt out. Thou clouted spur-galled scut, if you spend word for word with me, I shall make your wit bankrupt. Thou saucy guts-griping nut-hook, who art truly a dankish pox-marked blind-worm, begone!

Yes the Aurum/NeX store has been a bad idea, particularly in regards to the stillborn ambulation it delivered since any/most player interaction in establishments was meant to be based on Aurum apparently meaning the whole project was stillborn since players would be unable to create "new" items in the sandbox, only buy them from the NeX.

The question is what will CCP do with Aurum now, we know it will be used in DUST514 at least that was the plan, for aurum to be a bought currency next to isk in DUST514. The best merc would no doubt be bought with Aurum, at least in part. I wonder if CCP is reviewing its entire aurum policy or is just going to mute it until dust arrives.

Completely agree with OP.

I've said it a dozen times already but it cant be stressed enough:
We already pay the subscription payment for every single month we play (or someone else does it for us) and that payment should cover the entire game. Having to pay twice for some content is just bullshit.

please just make vanity part of EVE's industry with blueprints and production and get rid of aur. It doesnt belong in the sandbox.

Surprise DC Universe is now free to play and also has a subscription part that makes you "legendary" with extra stuff. You can pay them for ingame coins to buy extra stuff as well.

That was done only recently. They have had server problems trying to keep up with all the new people playing.

They obviously thought that it was worth while, but to really know you'd have to ask them if it is paying off. I think it probably is.

Must have been a scary idea for the people who were playing it before all the free players came in.

It's not paying off at all, they're closing it down soon because of lack of funding. It doesn't make enough money to cover the cost of the servers.
