Just saw this topic pop up in IGS, and felt compelled to post about it here.

I've been finding the Broteau/Colelie arc to be rather awesome. It added a lot of depth to Gallente/Minmatar relations, and being around during these events make me feel like a part of history. So...what happened?

Oh no, Midular was shot! The Republic isn't happy about the investigation, and want her transferred to one of their hospitals! The Federation isn't giving much info! Holy crap, the Republic just invaded with 15 dreads! They got defeated, but thousands died on both sides, what a fiasco! The Federation is giving Broteau over over passing sentence, they want him back alive! Uh oh, the Republic executed him! The Federation expressed displeasure over the execution!

Annnnnnnnd...nothing after that. It's been weeks since we had an update on what was supposed to be a very tense political situation. This isn't exactly an ending point, as there hasn't been a real resolutiton

Seriously. There should be something happening with this.

Historically, the Gallente Federation responds very dramatically to this sort of thing. At the same time, the current President is a hawk who made his fortune in the arms industry. At the very least, Roden should be making noise about the incident.

So they've just been partying these last two weeks?

I'm...actually pretty cool with that idea. Jealous, but cool ;)

Just as long as this storyline gets picked up when they get back. I want to see how this ends!

This is not the case at all.

Putting Live Events together is very much a team effort on the part of the whole Illuminati, and it's been quiet in terms of news since June 19th as we've been working on planning and making sure that the summer is covered with a fair few of the team going on vacation, plus we had the Odyssey deployment which has been taking up a lot of people's time.

Our intention is of course to continue with live events, news, and everything associate with it, but in future we'll be doing so at a much more relaxed pace that will see a couple of news articles per week, and an event here and there.

The news is set to resume this week, and just because things go a little quiet with regards to a certain subject, it doesn't mean that it's a dead issue Smile

Why do I read your post as "We are having success with something, that is why we are going to reallocated resources away from it"? That company strategy tends to eventually have the "bad" parts of the product overshadow the "good" parts and nobody are pleased.

I hope your meaning was just for the summer period.

Posted this on a non-EVEO forum, thought I might put it here so my feedback might actually be seen and maybe even useful ;)

Regarding the latest news post:

The Federation seems to be just bending over backward here. Given the recent relaxation of Caldari-Gallente tensions, this seems like the exact WORST time the Republic would want to make the Federation consider breaking the alliance, or at least limiting/halting aid. It might be that CCP wants to paint the Federation in a sympathetic light by having them try to make amends in face of insult after insult until they finally put their foot down, but it really just makes them look weak. If you can't get your own allies to apologize after invading you, and still try to be allies with them after...it doesn't look all that great.

Would also be interesting to see what the opinion of the general populaces are of this mess. Is the Republic fully behind Shakor, or are there elements who think things escalated too far? How are Federal Minmatar faring? Is the general Federation population happy with how their government has been handling the situation?

I'd love to see more in-depth news articles about this. I could easily see a number of possibilities:

  • With a hawkish President in office, perhaps the majority (or a significant minority) in the Senate are doves. If that's the case, there could be all sorts of multipartisan arguments going around in the FedGov. Reactions from the other voting blocs, or from Roden, would be interesting.
  • Perhaps this is an attempt to "give the Republic enough rope" on the part of the Senate. Making both the request and the rejection public issues might be a tactic aimed at the fickle voter - especially with a Presidential election coming up.
  • Perhaps the FedGov as a whole might earnestly believe that the alliance must be preserved no matter what. Like Galent says, this makes the FedGov look weak, but you do what you feel you have to when the chips are down.

Which of these (if any) would become clear in the follow-up. Nudge-nudge, CCP... ;)

I find this story arc brilliant.

As I see it, many players "wrongly" think the Federation and the Republic as bedfellows with a very strong bond and social customs. That has a tendency to melt them into one entity, which would make New Eden "lose" a faction. What this arc is doing, is highlighting the differences and loosen the bond, so that the state of this alliance approaches the one of the Amarr-Caldari relationship.

Highlighting the differences between these two factions also helps players a lot with developing their character persona, and the IC discussions this arc has brought has been great with a lot of nuances. I like in particular the focus on the Gallente cultural imperialism and opposition against it.

I like the idea of loosening the bonds, but the way it's been done has so far (in my opinion) made the Federation look incompetent and weak. Why did they match dreads at Colelie instead of bringing in overwhelming force to discourage any shooting at all? Why did they not demand recompense for the damage incurred by their allies? Assuming handing Broteau wasn't just offering the Republic more rope, why did they do it when they knew they weren't getting him back? And assuming that handing over Broteau WAS just giving the Republic more rope, why didn't the Federation use it to do something.

Overall, the Federation just comes off as something I'd be embarrassed to be fighting for right now. Having been in that situation before, I can say it's an uncomfortable spot to be in, both IC and OOC.

Well, realistically, 15 Moroses were overwhelming odds against the 15 Republic dreads... Blink

I'm personally fine with the actual battle - while the Fed could have brought more of a force, Colelie is something of a backwater system in a constellation that borders the Republic, so I'd accept the argument that there simply wasn't a bigger force in the area that could be scrambled in time.

But otherwise, I totally agree with you Galen. I can envision what the Federation is doing as a big game of "give 'em enough rope" combined with trolling for some political incidents to wave around, but I would like to see the FedGov actually demonstrate a spine and do something with all of that political capital.

*waves*

You know what this arc needs, by the way? More news articles! This is basically a major international incident between allies, it seems like there should be more talking (at least) going on. Responses from the Federation about Colelie. Shakor should say something. Tribal leaders who support the incursion? The should say something! Tribal leaders who think Shakor went too far? They should say something, too!

I'm happy the arc hasn't just petered out, and I like the latest news blip. I'd just like more of that.

Look, the Gallente Federation and the Minmatar Republic are probably duking it out through the Black Eagles and RSS groups, respectively. They haven't slipped and gotten capsuleers involved yet, but if it escalates, it could be something GalNet would cue us in to. In the meantime, I'll keep working on keeping the empires from poking their noses where they don't belong in null.

I'm not going to give them any ground when they violate Angel Cartel and Serpentis territory.

I don't think anyone really wants to know the "behind the scenes" content outside of Chrons (hint hint? ;)). What is more of interest is the noises coming from the governments on official channels. Imagine that a EU naval taskforce blew up a dozen U.S. Navy ships after being intercepted heading for the East Coast. I think the situation would spark SOME kind of reaction from the offended and offending governments: denials, accusations, boasts, condemnations....even between allies. Especially between allies.
