Ammo selection help

Hello all.

So I have been learning as much as possible about the game fitting, Weapon types, using the overview and scanner, orbiting... etc etc but 2 things that I have not come across in a in-depth manner is ammo selection or knowing what ammo to use and when.

I am aware there are different ammo types i e the Frigate I use,the Kestrel, currently is equipped with rocket launchers thus I use rockets, if I was too go with say a condor I might use light missile launchers and that would require light missiles.

on top of that (this is where I have trouble) there are different damage types of each ammo type, emp, kinetic, Thermal etc each for taking down a certain fit/ship.

My question is how can I identify when too use a certain ammo type, or is there a common one that will work in most fights? For instance I was told in RvB Noobfleet that I should use emp as that tends to be most common.

I would imagine (I may be wrong) that part of knowing what ammo to use is knowing the ships you are fighting and there most common fits, how would one learn this? is it a matter of playing or are there guides or ways too inject this knowledge in a faster manner?

if your ship isnt bonused for any particular damage type i would suggest loading inferno missiles as standard

In PvE missions, it is possible to know what you are up against and load ammo that works well against them.

In PvP, it's a bit more complicated. You usually want EMP damage against shield-tanked ships, Explosive damage against Armor tanked ships and Thermal damage as a compromise if you don't know. This is based on the T1 default resists.
However, with rigs and modules, a pilot can improve his resists individually and e.g. create a shield tanked ship whose best resists is actually EMP. And then, T2 ships can have very different resists.

Experience... After a while you will know all ships by heart, what race they are, what fittings and what weakness they have in their fittings. You will also learn to visibly recognize what guns they carry instantly, giving you insight into what range, likely speed the ship is fit for and providing a good guess at the tank.. Of course a ship can still be tweaked especially against that weakness in which case you switch ammo when you see your current one is rendered ineffective.

Quite simple and nothing more to it,

As a general rule, most ships in PVP will try to fit for omni tank, or at least plug their resistance hole as best as they can. BUT, T1 shield tankers are inherently weak at EM, and armor tankers are weak at explosive. As a compromise, you'll probably use thermal damage if you have no damage type bonuses (Caldari missile boats have a lot of kinetic damage bonuses, though this trend is gradually changing).

For T2 ships, they generally have a good resistance profile against their racial enemy. For example, Gallente t2 ships have high kinetic resistance (Caldari type damage) and vice versa, while Minmatar have good EM resistance versus Amarrian lasers and vice versa.

In these cases, shooting your bonused damage type may not be the best choice.

You did not say if you are running missions or PvP'ing, but if you are running missions, then ^ this. So much this. Keep this bookmarked in your in-game browser so you can refer to it as needed, carry a selection of each missile type in your cargo hold, and swap out according to the mission.

Other than that,

Is excellent advice. Note that some Caldari missile ships are bonused for kinetic (which means you'd want to use Scourge) so always check.
