Drone Mining in an Orca? What's the deal?

Hi,

I was mining early this morning and I ran into and orca mining a belt with 5 Miner II drones. The drones were mining everything, starting from one end of the belt,. I was there for 30 + minutes and there were no other ships around.

What's the deal with this? It seems like an expensive way to get a low yield or am I missing something....

not missing anything. Orca has a big hold, but awful mining yield. It's like mining in an iteron. Easy but a waste of time.

I'm just gonna start mining ice with my orca(s) and drones. Sounds very safe. Wont be easy to gank that.

Someone trained up t2 mining drones for bot mining in an orca? Good one.

Just for the record, I realise that you can't use drones to mine ice.

AFK mining. Aim at large roid, come back in an hour.

Crap yield but you're not really playing anyways.

It's essentially a more expensive but more gankresistant form of afk-hauler mining.

Step 1: Get into orca
Step 2: warp to asteroid field
Step 3: Lock onto like 2 different roids
Step 4: Send 1 or 2 drones to each different roid.

The amount of ore you will collect over time is so miniscule I dont even know why the guy would bother unless:
A) it is a bot
B) He/She turned on his computer, clicked to mine, and went to go watch a movie.

A is bad.
B is fine - but whats the point.

The downside is mining drones pop to rats almost instantly. IIRC rats used to have a preference for mining drones, too. I remember losing a few when I was a n00b (yeah yeah, I'm still a noob 6 years later). Anyway it's not all fun and profit. If you don't check once in a while you will come back and your drones will be gone.

B- because you can and not everyone in the game is masturbating him self with isk per hour and in fact it's always a +

You can't get something from nothing but you can get something from a little and little rivers make big oceans.
Specially with such silly training time and also because mining is boring.

Can you do something else instead? -yes sure, is it mandatory? no and it shouldn't, it's a sandbox, you should play it like you want and have your own ratio of fun/real cash has YOU expect and not like SOMEONE else thinks you should.
