Can we turn off the new jump animation?

I've found it basically impossible to get anything done in this game without an alt running at the same time. I hate that because it mostly ruins any immersion. But because of that I rarely even watch the animation as when I'm jumping I'm already looking over to the other client to see what needs to be done there. That said I can see how suddenly introducing that sort of camera movement into a game that has hardly anything like that at all could be very disconcerting. It seems like CCP could look at how many people have that auto camera follow target thing (whatever its called when you press 'c') on and then know how well big unplanned for camera, nondisableable movements would go over.

All that out of the way, the few times I've watched the animation it didn't bother me. I hated the loading bar (the few times I watched it) . Mostly it is the overwhelming noise I don't like. Seems a lot louder than the normal space noises.

So I'd very much appreciate a possibility to disable the turning.

you can simulate the old jump effect by closing your eyes and count to five

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

It's interesting to me that we suddenly get a flood of denials regarding motion sickness induced by simulated rapid motion. Does this mean that someone somewhere is getting worried about potential bad publicity?

I, for one, really do feel motion sick from the effect. No lie.

By the way, this entire problem would make a fascinating case-study for a cross-listed computer science / cognitive psychology class on human factors. I bet only some portion of the class would feel queasy from the effect and so one could debate the economic costs / benefits of various solutions.

You are probably correct that it would make an interesting study, and thanks for the link you provided. The thesis is well thought out, although appears to be more focused on virtual reality environements such as EVR (but to be perfectly honest I have not had time to read it in its entirety, and I want to be up front about that).
I will say that what I read didn't really seem to point to anything that pointed to the effect in EvE (and how it was implemented) as to having done anything that would be an obvious cause of motion sickness, but I may have overlooked the correlation you were drawing.

All that aside, if you are indeed experiencing discomfort you have my sympathies... especially since those that are sincere will be drown out for a while by people trolling for attention or who simply don't like it and will throw in additional drama just to try and justify their opinion.

Again, I am of the opinion that it is likely the general effect is in place to stay... but perhaps some tweaks can be made to it to alleviate your discomfort.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply.

You are quite right about the thesis: it's not specific to this problem. It's an old piece. I'd need a couple of weeks to dig up the ideal literature on this. I am teaching a class right now but I could be tempted to do the lit-search later on in the summer if I can be confident that something will come of it. I could also point you to some people who have done empirical work with HUDs in the past and who might be able to evaluate future design ideas for cognitive impact (or study this one).

Too bad the effect is here to say (if indeed it is). I'll probably hang on and train up skills for a while. I don't mind having an Eve character even if I won't play very much. It's a pretty cool bit of sci-fi.

The rest of the expansion is pretty awesome btw. I was looking forward to following up a clue-chase through nullsec up to Jove space quite a lot. Maybe after the next expansion. :)

Edit: one other thing. CCP: if you're going to study this yourselves please make sure you don't use 'a couple of hundred' paid employees as your test population. Being dependent on someone for your livelihood tends to muck up objectivity. I absolutely love what my employers do all the time too. Smile

Actually, due to the nature of how this effect is coded and linked to game mechanics, an "animation off" button is likely to be extremely difficult to code

How do you know ? Nothing in your profile indicate that you have more insight in this than anyone else outside of CCP

I work in IT as well

This fully qualifies you, indeed.

Selective quoting FTW. Smile

No kidding the person is an idiot. I agree that coding Mods for Homeworld would at least give you some/more insight into the issue than most others...

Everyone is always repeating the mantra "Don't Trust Anyone" ad nauseum... If I can't trust the guys I play with, why bother playing with them at all? Fly Solo...

The funny thing is as a kid I got motion sickness when I was in the back of a car.
Years later I still do but not when I'm in the front of the car. Smile

So it's not just, agrhwhaahatenewstoofkillitmenolikey but CCP managed to reproduce something that happens to me in the back of a car.

That's quite a feat if you think of it.

I would love a coherent respons from CCP on this beyond the "there's no old gate" troll, if this is either something they are looking into or those complaining about really getting sick are mopped up on the ' K3 whawhawha, QQ and they'll (have to) get used to it" bandwagon.

I didn't just pay for 2 accounts for a whole year to get sick by watching an animation that repeats itself over and over again that I have to sit through. Yeah I can block it by watching stuff on a web browser for example but that defeats the purpose of the animation being there.

Yep, no problem here. Just fill in and change what you want! But plan ahead and make it possible to choose. I do not understand we have to have these types of threads each time ccp choose to change something that worked ok pre patch. I understand it even less when I find out ccp apparently just bulldozed various complaints about this problem when they tested it.

Respect.Cool

CCP really should have listened and given a turn off option. Instead they just bulldozed past VALID FEEDBACK FROM TESTING ONCE AGAIN.

As the deal with past failures has shown you CCP, you really should not ignore VALID concerns about features like this EVEN when it is a pet feature of a powerful dev and it needs a turn off option...YMMV of course. What?

Yep it was fun at first but it's too dramatic a change from normal eve surroundings. And loud too. Worth keeping this alive for proper dev reply.
