I don't understand what they don't like about the game. I love just being able to log in and having the choice of either mining, running some missions or going out on a roam with my corp mates.

What i don't want to see is it being dumbed down and made more "pretty" for us.

I'd ask you to marry me but I'm already married lol.....women are no different from men they are as competitive and just as cut-throat as we are, my wife doesn't play this and tbh I wouldn't change eve to make her want to play it's just not her thing......to the women who do play and especially the ones who put up with our phallus jokes and beavis and butthead behaviour on comms I salute you

Or maybe ones with My Little Pony? That might work.

Definitely, this...oh wait...all you'd end up with is more guys - seems MLP is very popular with males.

Ponies!  We need more ponies!

The real question is: should we really be bringing attention to real genders in a MMO?

This game does bring out the jealous streak in my wife she works under the assumption and in fact has dreamt about me running away with some women I've met off here

This seems a little unfair to CCP IMHO. CCP didn't design this game to cater for anyone in particular, they just designed a game they liked. It was then mostly males who chose to play it.

What I would agree with is that there are unfortunately way too many sexist morons in Eve and other MMOs who are bang out of order with the way they treat female gamers. I think anonymity and socially ill adjusted men are a bad combination and give the rest of us a bad name.

On the flip side, I would point out that it is very difficult to integrate a female into a male only corp and not always for the reasons you might think. The truth is that, online or in RL, a group of guys interact and socially bond through the medium of mutual insults, vulgarity and generally ripping on each other. I've had my sexuality questioned (several times What? ), my intellect ridiculed, my accent made fun of for being too posh, my in game abilities trashed and a multitude of other things in the many corps I've been in and I am very happy when it starts because it means the corp have accepted me and feel relaxed enough to bring me in.

Now, I'm sorry ladies, but a lot of women don't seem to react to male banter in the same way as guys do and so any attempt to treat them "as just one of the guys" is met with frosty silence and/or anger and that's not just limited to Eve by the way. Also, I'm not talking about sexist comments, but any other sort of joking insult is taken personally.

Perhaps it's a social thing but men don't take themselves anywhere near as seriously as women do which is why a group of males behave in a totally different way to a group of females. It might also explain why there are so few female comedians...

I would like to clarify something. I enjoy male banter, and often participate. Many women do. There is a difference between male banter and bashing a specific group of people, whether the comment be one of race, gender, sexual preference, body type etc. And it's different when you're obviously joking.

When there's an entire conversation going on about how women are too stupid, or too soft, or too weak(really? should we type stronger or something? lol) to play EVE properly, or a 20 minute discussion on how women are evul ******* who suck the life out of you, or the knuckle dragging nerd who probably never spent real time with a non-inflatable woman's sexual conquest stories - this is different. It's unpleasant, unattractive, and quite frankly, it's r3tarded(and I mean developmentally delayed, stupid forum profanity filter)

Please note - certain women do this too, in reverse, and it's equally ********. I choose not to participate in this either.

This is old... it's soooooo old. Let's evolve already, huh?

my personal, anecdotal evidence calls bullshit on that 4%.

also, what people often fail to consider is how the interaction changes between players, once one of them reveals to be a woman... on games like world of Warcraft the socially awkward and misogynistic trend to get violent for no apparent reason, often harassing or just plain making people uncomfortable. and we are talking wow here, one of the safest as far a theme parks go....

consider now eve. a game that rewards the socially inept, and often puts them in positions of "power", or at least in a position of having enough power to affect the gameplay of others. why would a women put herself in that fix? yeah, sure if there's harassment it can be reported, but the experience has been ruined by this point.

i mean, over the years one thing remains a constant, women in video games don't like to be found. wanna know why? just make an alt say a few times you are a girl on the NPC corp chat, and eventually you'll get an evemail from a dude that wants to smell your farts, a convo from some other creep that wants you to listen to his mic, and god knows how many added you to their watchlist just to get a weird crepo feeling when you log in.

like i said, my personal experience shows a way higher than 4% number. and no, there's nothing to change in the game to appeal to women. that in on itself is already sexist. Blink

I play another sandbox MMO with a relatively high number of women (I think 30%+). But in there, the environment is more relaxed, it's more craft friendly (less competition, less junky UI...), it's much more of a cooperation game, more constructive things happen.

It's easy to see how EvE is not this and thus it does not appeal to them.

If ccp gave out cute pets and turned planetary interaction into more like a sims type game, tons of girls would play.

EVE needs Women

Mind if I ask why? Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind having more women around in EVE but to be quite honest I couldn't care less and I don't see why anyone would. If you want to stalk random strangers, facebook is somwhere over there -->.

What EVE needs is to be an enjoyable game (and possibly to revert the Navy Comet's paint job, just saying), the women who care about Internet space ships are much more likely to enjoy that rather than something that's tailored to a bunch of clichés and false stereotypes.

Admittedly there are lots of players with a distinct lack of social skills but personally I try to avoid them and their corps and I'm sure our female space-nerds are perfectly capable of doing the same.

You are absolutely right and I too would not consider making lurid or sexist comments "male banter" as I tried to make clear in my first post. I was just pointing out that, for whatever reason, quite a lot of the women I have met seem unable to understand how the banter works (or even realise that it is JUST banter) and take offense at stuff that any male player would have laughed about.

That said, there are a few women I have met who do get it and I am very happy to fly with them and would be delighted if one of them joined my corp. It sounds like you could be one of them Silfar Blink

I like Andie Nordgren's comment in the linked article. It's "more an indicator than something [to] strive for." , and I think this is a good attitude for CCP to have at this time.

In my opinion most players would be conscious the actual number of characters who are female in real life is low.

In relation, I'm amused that:

  • As CCP has to rely on the honesty of players when they create their account (with regard to whether they are male or female), their stats on this could easily be wrong. I'm not sure why players would say they are something they are not, but my point is it is possible some players don't answer truthfully for whatever reason.

  • it is not unusual to hear of male players who give gifts of ISK and ships to female characters if they have a cute/ sexy female avatar.

  • I've heard a male player boasting publically about pretending to be a women (through the use of a voice changer) so he can 'scam' gifts from male players who want to give stuff to female characters.

  • Male players with cute/sexy female avatars do get hit on by other players, and they then have to decide whether to play along with the myth or out themselves as a bloke.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if a player is male or female, it just matters they:
a) can play the game, and
b) feel their skills are respected, and
c) are not treated differently from other players.

Do you play EVE like a girl ...because um... you ARE a girl?

What, exactly, would be CCP's motivation to make that number up?

It's not really all that surprising, given the reputation of the playerbase, and that virtually every mainstream gaming and real media story about EVE involves some massive douchebaggery.

When I said my corp I meant the corp I am a member of but most of the guys (including the CEO) are 30+, many of them married and so not the knuckle draggers you'd be wanting to avoid.
