Quote:

CCP marketing bigwig David Reid recently told Destructoid that 96 percent of EVE Online players are male. The site also interviewed EVE senior producer Andie Nordgren, who opined that the numbers are a byproduct of genre.

"Part of it is due to the theme of the game. Science fiction is an extremely male-dominated domain," she explained. Whatever the reasons, CCP is OK with EVE's current demographics. "It's not a goal for us as a development team to specifically increase the number of female players," Nordgren said. It's "more an indicator than something [to] strive for."

Takeaways:
a) GiRL is GiRL. Think about that the next time you cyber.

b) How can we, a bunch of sci-fiction addicted hyper-aggressive males with spastic trigger fingers and/or mining/missioning Carebears who enjoy repeated repetition while dwelling in our parents' basement, help CCP to increase sub numbers by attracting female players to EVE?

I, for one, am at a loss. Especially after my wife laughed when I asked for suggestions.

We play this game to get rid of women and you want them in here ? Are you nuts ? I need some space ( in both meanings ), common !

I'm about as male as it gets, but, personally I chick out where it comes to avatar interaction, I feel like I've been starving for years for a way to walk around and explore Skyrim style and have a actual house on a station or planet and maybe grow wierd vegetables etc...

Beginning with spaceweed.

Yes, it needs to mate with sims, or Skyrim.

Badly.

Then the chicks will come.

And thats how the west was won.

I don't give a crap about the gender behind the avatar...it's personality that matters.

My wife spends countless hours in those time management games. Precious time she could spend manufacturing or mining or exploring (one can only dream)

But no, I guess it boils down to the excel sheet interface that does not appeal to everyone. As people pointed out, social interaction in eve is reading text and watching a still portrait, and that is not very much social.

Our current communications technology seems to be way ahead of eve's.

Luckily i have been in corps with female players, and luckily as well the players i have teamed up with are mature enough to respect everyone on comms regardless of gender or age.

I don't understand what they don't like about the game. I love just being able to log in and having the choice of either mining, running some missions or going out on a roam with my corp mates.

What i don't want to see is it being dumbed down and made more "pretty" for us.

It's not something that traditionally appeals to women, there's a stigma attached as well as the fact that there's not much character customisation after the creation screen.

if you want more women to play this game, you need avatar interaction within stations and vanity items for them.

Sad but true :(

And yet my girlfriend's avatars are just whatever was set, she spent only a minute or two on them because she didn't care about that. Where as I spent ages on mine...

If i'm honest i did spend some time on my portrait as i wanted her to look well. But it doesn't mean i'm vain and constantly changing her looks.

We can't. Why? Because:

1. The game itself is not friendly. Women love to travel and "explore" in real life, I think they would enjoy doing that in a space simulator too. But this game is too much focused on hatred, combat and destruction while women are looking more for friendship and to socialize. The grunt farming jobs in this game may be also very boring for women.

2. Men are stupid.

3. Men who play video games are stupid + 20% per level.

4. Hearing a girl giggling on TS adds another 100% boost to stupidity with 33% chance of -50% self esteem as side effect.

5. TESTOSTERONE !! (vs Women)

Or maybe ones with My Little Pony? That might work.

There's nothing much you can or should do about it. Most women don't take games serious, for various reasons, and because of that games that ARE serious will be avoided most of the time. Notice how games that aren't serious in nature, or don't take themselves serious, attract a higher percentage of female players. So EVE, being just about the most serious you can get, will never attract many female players. Apart from that the unwanted childish reactions & attention isn't really helping.

The real question is: Why does it matter and why would one (try to) emphasise it?

My Caldari pilot (female) has boots. That said, they have more heel on them than I think she'd like on her normal in-station clothes. I know why CCP hasn't offered the choice, though - they'd need a new model, complete with new animations, etc.

Girls in Eve?

Some time ago i was flying around often with a REAL girl (confimed via teamspeak). At this point i knew her for some weeks and gender was never mentioned before. And after the first surprise that a real girl is doing fleet things with a bunch of guys, gender was not a thing we were talking about afterwards too.

Personality is what counts and at least me and theother guys flying with us knew that, and thankfully there was no moron in that group who would have spoiled our fun (and if so i would have kicked him from fleet immedeatly) for sexual reasons.

There was only one person disliking this, and that was my RL girlfriend, as she was SURE that i wil cyberxxx this girl (and she hates eve from the bottom of her heart).

Long story short, it IS possible to find a niche for a girl in this game, but it might be hard to find the right ones to go with.

And here we have a poster child post for why EVE isn't going to attract more women any time soon.

I bet the poster here was 'only joking', of course. Because making sexist remarks in jest is funny. Well, for some, maybe. Not so much for the butt of the jokes, or for those who have heard them a thousand times, and saw them for what they were a long, long time ago.

Unless the community grows up and grows out of being your standard cess-pit of gamer misogyny, most women will steer clear of it, and the game.

This.

The times I have flown with a woman and hearing her on comms my reaction was this:

Ooh, she is a woman. Cool.

Then continued what ever we were doing. Don't see how it matters if the person at the keyboard is a man or woman. But that is just my point of view.

I did manage to find a corp that didn't care that i was a girl, there was no "omg you're a girl" on comms or any sexist remarks, they just treated me the same and we got along great taking about random day to day things like food and tv shows. Me being a female didn't matter to them.

I've tried to get the wife interested in EvE, she has no interest what so ever. She prefers that other game & Farmville.

Edit: I asked her again and she said it's a - "cutthroat, male testosterone dominated game and it just seems full of griefing and hatred." - direct quote.

She elaborated some more but that's the cliff notes version.
