The mission initially takes you to a deadspace location where four Gurista pirates pop up. A little rocket and electron/ion blaster work and they're gone. The mission requester - in this case, Ranta Tarumo, says that the mission's not done.

Checked the other asteroid locations in the Ultra system where the request originally takes place and nobody's home.

Except in one location, someone's trying out their shiny new Gnosis. I'm leaving mine in the hangar for now.Lol

So where are the other pirates that I must eliminate located? What assumption am I missing here? Again, it's probably something obvious, but...

Examine mission details in your journal.

Look up evesurvival.org / evewiki

I'm betting you have to pick up a certain item. Check the battlefield to see if there is a little jetcan floating slightly independent, but right next to/inside one of the NPC wrecks.

Thanks for the reply -

There's nothing more in the mission journal that suggests that a pickup of some sort is necessary. Local scan doesn't seem to find anything any way. Gurista wrecks yielded nothing. The eve-survival site suggested by Vortexo lacks info on this particular mission.

This is perhaps the only annoying thing I've found so far in the beginners training missions: the lack of sufficient context for some of the mission objectives.

More information - this is from the Ten Ton Hammer site:

OBJECTIVE: Clear the pirates from the asteroid belt, as your agent has requested on behalf of a group of miners.
REWARD: Weapon
BONUS REWARD: Weapon Ammunition

MISSION DETAILS: Missions 1 through 9 are in the same system so all you need to do is undock and warp to the deadspace location. When you warp in, you'll find one small vessel nearby and a few others a bit further off. They are far enough apart that you can pick off the closest single ship then the two close together, then finally the last single. It will help to have the newbie shield booster equipped for the long series of fights.

So, according to this description, I've completed the mission task: knock off four pirates and it's done. Another training mission glitch perhaps?

After the downtime the rats should respawn. Try it again and if it still does not work create a petition. GMs should be able to fix it for you.

Thanks for the reply. A petition did it. Didn't get the bonus, but the mission complete was accepted. Quick and humorous response from GMs. That level of service takes a lot of frustration out of the game, especially in the early days, when it's not always easy to determine whether you've made a mistake or whether it's actually a glitch. I've only filed two petitions, and I think that the first one was probably my own fault for losing a set of core probe scanners. The situation referenced here was definitely a glitch, though.

I really don't mind the learning curve that seems to intimidate some newcomers. I take it as part of the challenge of the game and also as an indicator of the depth and richness of the experience that awaits the patient player. There are simpler, more linear games out there, but that's not EVE, thank heavens.

I feel your pain. I was playing a new ALT a few months ago and had something simular happen. I didn't get a free ship when I went to the station in my pod, no matter what I did or tried to do. It was strange and people thought I was crazy, I just ended up sending my ALT isk to buy a ship. There are glitches out there in this game, some are stranger than others.

Was there an acceleration gate at the first location? If so, you needed to activate that acceleration gate and it would have taken you to another location with more rats
