I don't have a link, but I recall reading something about OSC saying it wouldn't be the same story. In any case, we can assume at least the author would be ok with the movie version.

How they will combine the Ender/Bean stories into a movie that is not 4+ hours long is beyond me at this point.

Sequel.

Perhaps there will be a sequel, and I'm all for that. But this movie is specifically a combination of Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow, plus the other short stories and relevant chapters in other books.

I'd be hopeful from that, save two things: 1) Card has been getting increasingly weird these last few years, and 2) Since when did the original screenplay make it through wihout dozens of tweaks, re-writes, and visits by a script doctor?

Maybe something to do with that stroke he had a few years back? I dunno if that predates his weirdness. Or maybe he is just getting old and senile....

First things first, I don't really care what the original author's antiquated beliefs may be.
The book and movie should each stand on their own merits or demerits regardless of whether you hate or love the author as a person (or his "political" views)... or at least in my mind, that's how things should be (even if they usually aren't).

Would I love a faithful book-to-movie adaptation ? Heck yeah. But good luck finding a big bunch of under-10-olds that can actually ACT the way the books are written. So, you know, unless they turn it into an animation series, not much chance of that happening.

Cnsidering the book is nearly 30 years old (and that's quite literally a lifetime in terms of literary work), I doubt that letting the original writer have a big hand in the movie script is such a great idea.
See Star Wars and George Lucas - the original trilogy was crude and downright cheap at first, but full of quirky (even sometimes campy) charm, precisely because of the struggles they faced while filming and the young viewpoints of the makers. Trying to recreate the same recipe at a much older age, with all accumulated emotional baggage and fame rushed to one's head is asking for trouble.
Although, I suppose that we're only talking general outlines and initial drafts, with many other hands in that pot. Not that would be a great idea either, but, meh.

Bottom line ?
I fully expect a perfectly average (or at best a bit above-average) blockbuster chock-full of the usual Hollywood blockbuster quasi-stale tropes, but with extra explosions and lens flares'n stuff.
It can't possibly end up being a flat-out bad movie (stay away, Murphy!), so, worst case scenario (fingers crossed), a halfway decent pop-corn movie.
Which is still better than no movie at all, I guess (or, rather, hope).
If it ends up being great, then hooray, no ?

Not an easy assertion to make, I'm afraid - Numerous authors have been terribly unhappy with the results of movies for which they wrote the screenplay.

The Lucas comparison is apt - Like George, Scott is apparently slowly losing his grip - at least from a creative standpoint; probably from other angles as well.

Presuming that the movie can't be a disaster is also a lengthy leap - I can think of recent movies that *ought* to have been at least decent that stank horribly (Battleship, I'm looking straight at you!).

Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

Well, it was kind of plot-holey and the connection to the "game" was tenuous at best, but it wasn't THAT bad. I'd even go so far as call it ever so slightly above average.
Could it have been a lot better ? Sure, but still, it's not like you wouldn't watch it on TV for free a few years from now if nothing else interesting is on.

I'll never forget his shear projected volume screaming out of a conference room at Worldcon 88 in New O. He's been whacked since at least then.

Pretty much this.

But it's getting even harder to have that much faith in any of them currently, as I'm always rambling on about.

"Kind" of plot-holey? Shocked My 7 year old complained about the plot holes!
Horrible acting, horrible directing, horrible casting, horrible... Pretty much everything. They even made a real life hero look trite!

The only* redeeming factor was the explosions, and sorry, but explosions can't act or carry a plot.

OOO I may well be watching that, I loved the book and if the film lives up to even 10% of the original work then it'll be worth watching, I have hope.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Well, there's "only" about 81 (or 82-84) things "wrong" with it ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kmatKUBBck ) but they're mostly the "probably might do a suspend of disbelief thingy" kind if you're in a lenient mood.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't actually pay money to go see it, but I'd totally watch it for free for the 'splosions'n'stuff. In the background. While doing something else too. Not bothering to change the channel.

Ah. You're using it for 'visual Muzak.' Probably the only purpose for which it is fit.

What are everyone's thoughts on the use of the Dr. Device at the end of the trailer? While visually pretty, it looks nothing like it was described in the book. This looked like two death-star beams.

And I'm already disappointed, Ender did not give the order to use the MD Device, it was Bean. This leads me to think Bean's role is reduced, which is sad to me, as he is my favorite character.
