Spaceship Command Skill Training

Does increasing the level of skill training in the Spaceship Command category make you better able to fly the ship it is named for? For instance, the description of destroyer training is, "Skill at operating Destroyers." However, no statistics of improvement are given, as they are in other fields. They usually say something like, "5% increase to [blank].

I have noticed that higher levels of training unlock new ship classes, but my question is for someone like me, who is trying to maximize my abilities on with the hulls I'm flying (frigates, COVOPS and destroyers) does it make sense to train COVOPS V or Destroyers IV if I don't intent to push on right away to Recon Ships or Interdictors.

Thanks!

The stats you seek are in the ship info window.
So if you hop on the market, and press info on a destroyer you like, you'll see in the description the bonus you gets from training
the destroyer skill.
