I know this is oft asked, but let me set some qualifiers:

Fairly cheap T1, good all around to get experience and to learn in, and has no well known weaknesses.

TIA for suggestions. I am researching, but want to combine that with advice from experienced players.

Also, for the record, no real pvp experience in EO to this point, but have skills trained up decently.

I would suggest the Amarr Punisher or the Minmatar Rifter.

The incursus is also a great little blaster boat with a dual rep fit

The Punisher/Rifer are great for brawling, while the Executioner/Slasher are great ships to use with a speed tank.

Less than 5 million to fit decently, and pack quite a punch.

One more suggestion...

Find a like minded player... and pvp together, solo pvp does not work out to well... chances are you'll be blown away before you can even "learn" anything from that fight.

What do you mean by "no well known weaknesses"? In what context?

Like, versus other frigates? Just grab any build described as a Brawler.

Versus destroyers? You'll want a tackle/speed build.

I would suggest the Amarr Punisher or the Minmatar Rifter.

Seriously? I never liked punishers in PvP. Merlin would be a better choice IMO.

Im guessing you are low Sp so i would not recommend punisher as amarr's bread and butter is scorch wich is the T2 ammo, its not a long train but i guess you want to start like right now if you dont already have T2 lasers trained.

And punisher is the most obvious ship to spot the weakness from the ships already suggested with its 2 med slots (and most usually plate fit it too) making it very easy to disengage if the other guy knows he will loose.

Now i havent flown a punisher since the armor tank buff, so i guess its abit more agile than it used to tho.

Why is everyone suggesting frigs anyway? Cruisers are still very agile and nimble, have alot more in the case of tank and damage, and arent That expensive either. OP just said "T1", the caracal, thorax, moa and rupture are all good inexpensive ships.

Meh, maybe its just me.

OP said he needs it cheap, and the context of the question is that he is new and thus cannot afford to throw away many cruisers.

I suggest :

Merlin (solid shield tank and good dps)
Punisher (Solid buffer tank, use minmatar guns to save power)
Incursus (Cruiser-like active armor tank)
Rifter (Fast/Agile, can do armor or shield tank, reasonable dps and very versatile so hard to know how to counter it)

If you got cash to splash on cruisers :

Rupture (Excellent all rounder, fairly cheapy)
Omen (Very solid since recent updates, standard gank boat with lots of dps at mid range)
Maller (Solid armor tank, average dps, good bait ship)

So first of all when you learn to PvP its much easier and (in my opinion) more fun to fly with a friend or two. Once you become more expierienced I'd suggest flying solo but when you first learn grab a buddy.

Now to answer your question about a good ship to fly, I'd say T1 frigs are the best to learn in just because they're disposable. When you learn its nice to be in ships that aren't expensive so you can try things that will probably get you killed like engaging bigger ships and whatnot. Dieing is the best way to learn pvp so you want something that doesn't break that bank everytime it pops.

My favorite T1 frig is the atron. load null and scramrange kite. Its super cheap and can take on a ton of targets.

Other frigs I'd reccomend are the slasher, incursus, and merlin

Good luck friend!

This.

Actually, I did learn something. At my skill level, I have no hope against a Tornado.

Just...don't do solo PvP unless you feel like spending a lot of isk and time. This game is more fun with a group, trust me. ;)

The exception to this would be Factional Warfare novice plexes.
Sign up with the Amarr mate and you'll have all the 1v1 fights you want! (They are vastly outnumbered).

You might be surprised. Unless they have a gimmicky small-gun fit, if you can get into a tight orbit on a tornado, they're typically quite toothless.

Getting into that orbit is occasionally problematic, however.
