How'd it go for you, at first?

I'm trying to get into EvE for the 3rd time in 7 years or so. The depth / complexity always appeals to me after I've reached some level of success (read: boredom) in other games. Guess I just like learning.. once I 'get it', it is almost immediately boring.

I'm interested in PvP, nothing more.. UO, DAOC, Darkfall, PoTBs.. the list goes on.. the only constant being no risk == no long term fun.

So here I am in EvE, taking my lumps. Losing badly.. don't mind.. if it ain't hard to get good at, there is no reward.

The only thing that nags me is, I feel like almost all fights are won or lost at the point of engagement. Most times I look back and realize I had no place engaging what I did with my current boat. Setting up something new and heading out in it seems to give me 'the shakes' more than actually fighting in it..

TLDR: does EvE combat get more visceral (for lack of a better term?) once the game slows down? So far I feel like learning about the game is more fun than actually playing it. Anyone Experience anything similar? Am I just too 'real-time twitch-obsessed' to enjoy EvE combat long - term?

Talk about a dumb #@$ing thread, eh?

My first toon was into mining and casual PvE. I got blown up a lot. I mean, like, A LOT.
Garamonde has had much better luck at deading other players. Needless to say, I started enjoying EVE a lot more, once I started racking up kills. And, as a side-note, I'm probably one of the only players that realizes Battleclinic is a much more accurate record of kills and losses.

I was on the receiving end of Goonswarm in the Pendulum war. Noobships, thousands of them. I didn't stand a chance Sad

I think we ended up Doomsdaying them and betting on how many killmails we would get.

You know..... I'm just going to say that getting DD'd was about the worst experience of my video gaming life. And this is coming from someone who actually tried to play Bayonetta.

But, oh my Chribba, was it beautiful....

It was like fishing with dynamyte.

Get a Stabber and into the swarm and shout on comms any 80's song you could think of and Titans back at the POS would fire an AOE DD through your cyno field.

Truely those Titans were the embodiment of a broken game.

I don't know why they changed the DD effect..... there was nothing wrong with it, in the beginning.
I remember it, clearly..... it was like a big ball of chain lightning. Never before has your own death looked so amazing.

Once we had them moving in squadrons of Titans as an Artilery group it was broken. 3 DD on one fleet overwhelms it if they are of 2 different damage types. In the early days wars began on the suspicion that one side was building a Titan, and often they were wrong but highcom would get paranoia and relocate assets anyway.

You're right. In cases where player skill is and it's an actual 1v1 most the fights are won based on what ship and fit beats which in the complex rock-paper-scissors. So you get better you learn to do things that will maximize you advantages like dictate range or some other manual flying tricks.

But yes, get used to winning or loosing due to your ability to see farther down the decision tree than your opponent.

This is why I tend to stay out of 0.0 living. My kill record shows I'm not afraid to roam through there and make the locals panic.... but I much prefer the peace of mind that comes from lowsec piracy :)

However..... the few times I've been sucked into nullsec politics, I've come out of it with some pretty amusing stories.

Only the null resident knows what it's like to have your British CEO scream at your whole corp, on Vent "If any of you de-evolved pikey bastards bumps the titan, I swear by Lucifer, I will stab your internal organs in alphabetical order!"

I hope that wasn't me, it sounds like me when I've had a few. Its sometimes a bad idea to FC when you have a mini fridge in arms reach Oops

Only time I've ever really used them has been for logistics, have a chain of POS through allied space and use Titan jump bridge to jump freighters en masse. I think I prefered the old way where you could do all of this from within the bubble, knowing we were doing this with thousands of angry reds in local made it all the more fun for us as they saw so much material moved to the front line..... but I suppose that one was a bit broke too.

Preaching to the choir, man... I was the original drunk capsuleer. It's been my schtick, since the beta. :p

In fact.... I'm STILL craphammered, every time I'm logged in. Right now, for example :)

I used lots of lube and everything turned out okay.

BoBwins Law: As a discussion/war between two large nullsec entities grows longer, the probability of one comparing the other to BoB aproaches near certainty.

How did it go for me?

I decided to join, have found and read Tuskers' blogs, have read huge chunks of forums, signed up, undocked, did newbie military tutorial, failfitted my first rifter, went to Havrice, got exploded by jag pilot and keep exploding ever since. Currently I moved away from Eve Online into SkillQueue Online but hey, it is my money and my time so whateva.

And yes, most fights are won/lost before they even start and no, it is not about ship you fly.

Some fights are just unwinnable. But at the same time, 99.9% of one sides fights are avoidable. I have lost many fights I had no place losing, and won many more I had no place winning. Eve is complicated, and combat is no exception. The thing is there's a lot of ways to turn a fight around. Ive beaten dramiels and tracking disruptor hook bills in my trusty little fire tail. I killed an omen on my first outing with the new Talwar.

Here's a little light reading to help you understand some of the more advanced dogfighting elements.

You just need to find what you enjoy. Learn from mistakes, Never fight fair. If you fight fair in EVE you're doing it wrong. Try doing stealth bombers or something else cloaky? That's a very different style of pew pew to blobfests. Just don't be afraid to try new stuff.
