Some questions about vanguards

So a small group of friends and I are looking at incursions as a source of income. There are 9 of us (with some people dual boxing if we can't get 10), and we would schedule it for something like Saturday mornings when we all know we could be on. We figured vanguards would be our best bet so we can still play together and not have to deal with the...well, drama that seems to inhabit some of the incursion community.

So the questions:

1) Are vanguards still decent isk/hr? We tend to be very tight knit and coordinated and will run with "shiny" fits.

2) What fleet composition should we be looking at? I have seen some people run battleships (which we can do), but we were thinking of zealots/legions, guardians and armor links:

1x Armor links (offgrid)
2x Guardians (5 reps, 1 transfer)
8x Legions/Zealots (some duders aren't quite to a legion yet).

We were thinking the sig tank of the legions/zealots would be better, as well as their smaller guns having better damage application (albeit less dps) than a battleship.

3) Implants; I was pondering investing in LG slaves to add some extra buffer for the logi to work with. But we started talking about zealots/legions and I was thinking that a HG Halo set might be better to further reduce the sig (alongside being much cheaper). I guess, in terms of survivability, which would be better: LG Slaves or HG Halos? The rest of the implants would be standard 3% or 5% hardwirings.

4) Learning curve; most of us have only been F1 monkeys in incursion fleets, we don't really know strategies behind them or how they work. We primarily run missions for income and venture into FW warzones for pvp. Is learning vanguards difficult to do, and are they difficult to complete?

5) Availability; are there enough vanguards out there to be able to constantly move from one to the next without interruption?

1.I find it easy to make 100mil an hour FC’ing VG’s. (Shiny shield FC)

2.The Legion fleets, used to make great ISK/HR doing NCO, and then NMC and OTA’s only if they had to. That being said Cruisers are going to have some range restrictions that will require letting the spawns get on top of you before your DPS is effective enough to kill them.

3.Not sure if a set of implants are necessary, but buffer is always nice to have.

4.The kill order in VG’s is one of the simplest and least varied of all the Incursions sites. Take a fleet of high buffer ships in first till you get the order you prefer down pat, then you can trim tank for gank as you see fit.

5.You will most likely never run out of sites, most constellations have 3 VG systems and 7 sites in each system. Additionally if you running in a system with a shield fleet they will be focusing on OTA’s and leaving the NCO’s for last, essentially the opposite of what a Legion fleet would be doing.

6.If you’re going to be running for awhile, get a stockpile of Lyavite, (a stack of 255 units is required to complete an NMC) and an MWD ship to drop it. Stopping to mine it as you go is a sure fire way to lose fleet members interest and break up a well oiled machine.

Feel free to email me if you need some more info.

Thanks for the great response.

As for the fleet composition...would you recommend Faction battleships (Navy armageddons/Vindicators) over a mix of Zealots and Legions? We can do that too, but it will just require a bit more planning on who does what and some more training. Mixing target painters with Vindi webs might give us good damage application.

And when you talk about range, will scorch reach out to the spawn? The fast crystal swtiching would seem to be ok for changing to whatever is in range.

Both fleet doctrines will work, sites should take you 5 minutes to complete when you get it down right, so faster align and warps will save you time and make you isk, that’s why I would recommend the legions, but you might want to start out with a BS heavy fleet comp till you know everyone is comfortable.

There’s only one rat, that will sit outside your ranges (‘Mara’ essentially a Sansha logistics ship) and you will just have to focus fire to get it down, small sig rad and range makes it a pain sometimes. Everything else is going to get within 24km, so webs are 100% needed, and lots of spare drones.

Oh one more thing if you’re going to be doing OTA’s make sure you have a hacker to shut down the tower logistics, otherwise the frigs in there will rep themselves between shots, it gets very frustrating.

BS for OTAs, where most of the ehp is in BS rats. Keep in mind that you still need to fit at least 4 faction dmg mods for your armor BS in order to contest OTAs with shiny shield fleets (they always fit 4). BS get hit hard by torps. Prioritize exp and kin resists (from torps), you can let em and heat (from lasers) drop a bit in order to fit the 4 dmg mods.

Pure Legion fleet for NCOs, and NMCs if you're out of NCOs. Fitting for NCO contest is a lot less strict. Shiny shield BS fleets have zero chance to contest a pure Legion fleet in NCOs even if the Legions are poorly fit. Cruisers take no dmg from torps, and Amar t2/t3s already have high exp resist, it's much easier to tank.

Most fleets are a mix of BS and legions. You can do all 3 vg sites, and possibly lose all 3 to contests.

Scorch will reach. 48km optimal for medium scorch on legions, 65km optimal for BS. Spawn will be within that range for all vgs. Crystal swap is usually unnecessary, as rats should die before they're in multi range, unless you move fleet to spawn.

In a well fit fleet, long Bhaalgorn webs work better than short Vindi/Kronos/Paladin webs, as rats die before getting in range. Avoid webber Lokis, they don't have the projection and dps, and contribute only webs, which is not worth it.

What does "contesting" mean?

Two fleets land on a site at the same time, both go in and do the site cutting the time it takes in half (Not usually true, but fun for dramatic effect). The fleet that does the most damage gets paid and the other fleet gets nothing. It called contesting. :)

I think Goldiiee covered your questions rather well but just to add a bit to what was first said;

1) Still good 100 -120 mil/hour is achievable, a non shiny fleet can do 80 mill an hour easily enough

2) 2 logi @ lvl5, 8 dps - 8 legions will do well in NCO's if you want to do the other sites also get in a few BS's - Apoc Navy issue may work here due to range boost - up to 80km with scorch. Look on youtube for videos of armour fleets doing vanguard sites and see what kind of fleet comp they use.

As for off grid boosts, get a legion or damnation with the mindlink for boosts, you will also find it helpful to get a dedicated skirmish booster for the web range boosts - if you dont know how to set a fleet up for dual ogb mail me and I will help you out.

3) Imho go slaves for buffer, you may find you can drop a plate for more gank but as stated already go over tanked for the first few runs so you get an idea of how to do this.

4) Not that steep, As said kill order is rather rigid in vanguard sites, kill of the most dangerous ships first (the ones that jam/scram) i.e. Niarja's jam so kill them first as jammed logies can't rep you
http://incursionguide.wordpress.com/2011/03/19/nation-commander-outpost/ - use this as an initial guide to kill overs, you may find a better way of doing sites for you over time.

5) Depending on how many HS vanguards are up you may find your system empty or full, scout about to find the best sysyem for you.
Which systems are vanguard etc;

Also if you see shield fleets running in the same system as you (use dscan and look for the community tags on the ship names) talk to them, you should find that they are very happy to work with you so you get the NCO sites.
