I disagree, a cartoon is just the media used to portray a story. The content of the story is what determines the target audience.

Try showing a cartoon version of The Human Centipede in between episodes of Tom and Jerry and see what happens.

Two of the defining characteristics of a carebear are wanting other players to play the way the carebear wants and whining on the forums for the game to change when they don't. Yet I see more threads on these forums from gankers than I do miners whining about wanting the game changed to suit them.

It's so much fun watching the "serious" players getting their pixels in a bunch over people using "toon" that many people use it as a taunt, as well.

Tom and Jerry are disgusting. Such violence!

For the sophisticated gentlemen here, those who braved the MMO market before WoW, the term char (short for character) seems much more familiar, appropriate and, as some might claim, less gay.

Actually the word "char" is just ridiculous and sounds ********, and that's why nobody uses it.

It's less ridiculous than "toon".

It was used rather extensively in The Realm (1996), so it predates UO as well.
Of course, in the case of The Realm, the term is rather appropriate.

Hah mid 90s, lucky guess on my part!

Oh, and yes, we used "toon" in Everquest quite often. We also used "alt" and "twink", since not everything was untradeable like in WoW, we would use our "mains" (hardcore raiding groups) and the "crap" tradeable items, or very expensive items that were overpowered, we would trade to a lesser skilled/leveled "alt/twink" to pimp out.

Easiest reference for example would be if you had a miner/industry main pilot and decided to outfit a blingy machariel to a pvp pilot who didn't really have the skills to afford to mission run his way to get one himself.

Or faction fitting a smaller cruiser or frig etc, you get the idea.

You don't watch a lot of anime do you? Some of it is DEFINITELY NOT for children.Oops

De'Veldrin's Corollary (to Malcanis' Law): Any idea that seeks to limit the ability of a large nullsec bloc to do something in the name of allowing more small groups into sov null will inevitably make it that much harder for small groups to enter sov null.

Actually the word "char" is just ridiculous and sounds ********, and that's why nobody uses it. Character is too long and cumbersome, hence "toon".

And it's misleading, if I claim to sell my char the first question I get is if I was talking about my toon or a charon.

Stupidity should be a bannable offense.

Fighting back is more fun than not.

I say "toon" unabashedly. Don't like it? Too freakin' bad. The avatars are cartoons, people, not images of people.

edit: the term "char" means only one thing to me: it's a variable type in many programming languages and a field type in several database models.

I first heard and started using the term toon in Star Wars Galaxies.
It is easier to type. Has 4 letters, but you only need 3 keys to type it!
