Monocles: do they disappear when you pod someone wearing one

You misunderstand. I commend you on managing to make such a travesty of an avatar. I didn't think such an abomination was possible. You have stretched the limits of the character creator. Your avatar is horrific enough to scare a grown man. And by the way mine was random.

I justify the indestructibility of NEX items with the idea that you are buying the "rights" to the design, much like when you buy and download something (game or movie) from amazon or PSN. Obviously the physical materials for a NEX shirt do not cost as much as a BC or BS. So when someone gets podded I imagine all of their items including monocles get incinerated, and their clones awake with new clothes (and monocles) reissued.

So, to answer your question I like to say that your medical clone will get a new monocle reissued since you have spent a ridiculous amount of money to use the design, at least until you sell your "monocle license."

Ah, of course! That is the obvious answer. So I suppose that you just get issued a new item when you dock until you undock. I do realize justifying the logic here is rather absurd but this does make a bit of sense especially the high costs.
