Why do so many of the older players seem to think that rendering aid constitutes coddling and makes them and the new player soft?

Would sponsoring and providing for the new players be antithetical to the ideals of EVE?

Should there be a common database or stickied thread here listing useful tools and links for them?

Rendering aid is fine. People do that all the time. Creating exceptions from the normal rules and CCP giving handouts isn't. There are some people and organizations who voluntarily devote a lot of time for the specific purpose of guiding new players. There are also stickied resource threads for new players. They're just in the correct forum area and I don't see a particular need to create duplicate threads of them here.

THERE are a TON of corporations dedicated to helping new players.

However, those aren't the mega coalitions. WHY?
1) Most people pretending to be new players are actually alts of experienced players looking to spy, grief, sabotage, etc. You need to see someone has put a lot of time, money and effort into an account before they can be reasonably trusted to be what they say they are.

2) There are so many other things to worry about in null that it is hard to take time to teach a new player. It is much better for them to spend a good amount of time learning the basics of the game in a less stressful environment than trying to live in null.

Oh, and check the new players forum. There are several sticky's with tons of links to very useful tools and sites.

I help people all the time, old or new.

Sometimes, though, it just seems a bit too much,
considering topics that they could easily handle themselves,
if they learned how to use google.

Not even asking for knowing about the evelopedia, but i keep pointing it out.

I don't even blame the noobs, except the *really* stupid ones.

Who's to blame are the shithead older players who sit in starter corps and lots of highsec corps,
not actually teaching anybody anything. I've had talks with a LOT of new people about this.
Why i mention highsec explicitly ? Because lowsec corps *need* to teach their noobs,
because without that, they won't survive a single day !

TONS of corps helping noobs ? I haven't met any ... and eveuni is mostly crap, with a corrupt leadership.

Regarding sponsoring ... well ... throwing money at a noob has no point. We just see what happens then,
when we find the next faction fitted battleship flown by a two month old. Instead of doing that, i let them WORK
for their money and they even ENJOY it ! :D Tested that ... works great ... will keep doing it.

Working for money and knowledge ... that's the spirit !

I help newbs all the time. If they ask a question in local, I answer it.

Occasionally, they even learn a lesson all on their own. Someone found a wormhole while I was missioning, and showed up back a few minutes later having been podded.

People aren't adverse to helping newbies out, the tutorials don't go nearly far enough in a lot of respects, so help from other players is a newbies first source of information, even if they only get referred to an OOG resoruce, certainly some bad advice gets given, but I reckon it's outweighed by the good advice.

You only have to read through the new player Q&A forum to see experienced players handing out good advice every day, especially with regards to mechanics and gameplay options.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

You mean like this, uh... stickied thread:

or this common database:

or this:

Most vets are happy to help newbies. I know I am. The people who aren't worth helping are the ones who outright refuse to do any legwork or reading on their own behalf. If you ask "How do I PI?" and I send you a link to a guide on how to PI, you better not come back with questions that show that you have not read one word of the guide. Similarly, if you ask a question whose answer is found in the first result of a relevant Google search, at best, I'm going to send you a lmgtfy link.

Showing newbies how to make money and do things is good. Giving them free stuff without a structure to let them spend it wisely is far less productive (example: 2 month old players in faction battleships).

No, this is a great thing to do in fact I personally provide for my adopted newbees and several other goons do the same for theirs. EVE isn't easy to learn but, it is easy to get frustrated with before you find what you like to do in the game. That's where this idea comes in, newbees are really cheap to support literally 50 million isk will last them months. Of course giving away isk is counter-intuitive to isk/hr so perhaps that is why its not so widely done in highsec and by most pvers.

This post was loving crafted by a member of the Official GoonWaffe recruitment team. Improve the forums, support this idea: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&find=unread&t=345133

I have 1000 newbees under my wing. I put them into bed every night and read them their favorite skill book.

Hi,

I'm not sure why you think that helping newbies is considered to be so abhorrent, but we have a forum dedicated to helping new citizens.

It has many stickies and guides with links to Wikipedia and so on.

I'm closing this thread as it's redundant, in that case.

Look forward to seeing you in the New Citizens Q&A!

Edit: Also, please check out the links in Ruby's post. There's some good stuff, right there.
