Hello
What's with the galaxy map, how to make sense of it? Can only see a mess of lines, that I don't care about, then each solar system is kind of the same, and there are regions with names, don't know why when everything is a mess.

Only useful thing I get from the map is the security number for a star system.
What's the difference between one region and another, besides the fact that the market can only be searched for a region?
The mess of lines makes everything feel without substance, like borders or regions.

On the surface the map seems like it would have the cool thing going for it like that scene from Star Wars where Yoda is showing Obi Wan where the missing star system is.

BUT -

You are right. The 3D effect on a 2D suface just ends up hard to read.

Most of us use DOTLAN bookmarked in the in game browser.

The map provides information.

If you don't care about information provided to you, how do you hope to play this game?

True.

There is ONE use of the map.

Under certain tabs, you can select to show total jumps, ships killed in last hour, and pods killed in an hour. Can (usually) indicate possible gatecamps (particularly null sec entry points or certain low sec systems) or the scene of a major bettle going on.

BUT -

For regular readable system map, DOTLAN.

If he finds the in game map confusing DOTLAN will short circuit his brain.

Another option is to search for "eve regions .pdf" on google. Handy alternative to dotlan, I find it easier to use for navigation, however dotlan has more data on systems. But as said above the in game map still has some use for veiwing things like autopilot routes, and real time system data that helps you find or avoid conflict.

I actually think the ombeve maps are more visually pleasing.

Only thing about it is, it is hard to view them in game without tabbing out because the in game browser does not support .pdf that I am aware of.

Now, if CCP could implement a good readable 2D jump system mode on thier in game map like ombeve or DOTLAN along with the real time data like thier eye candy map, we would have a winner.

It also should not take forever to load. Those couple of seconds while the map is loading and you cannot see main screen could be deadly in some of the circumstances I get into.

It would be pretty cool if they updated the map somehow...

I like to use Ombey's 2D EVE Maps (PDF).
