WHOA!! That caught me completely off guard....well said and I appreciate the honesty and communication as well as the apology....definitely restored most of my faith in CCP and its leadership.....don't forget your words and remain faithful to them over the coming months and I'm sure Eve's future will remain a bright one!

Takes major balls and guts to publicly admit and apologize for one's mistakes...glad CCP has a CEO like this!!
Will continue to keep my 4 accounts active as long as this type of honesty and communication remains....

You got some brown stuff on your nose, might want to do something about that.

Hilmar needs to step down. Especially after this restructuring.

More communication by sacking the communcation team.

And his apology letter stinks of PR spin. We are watching what you do. And you just fired your communication team when we want communication.

Just stupid.

a letter to the followers of eve
reported by CCP Hellmar | 2011.10.05 17:29:00

A few excerpted comments and my initial responses:

* "Dust 514"

-playstation 3? A developement branch dumbing down to console thumb twitchers on underpowered proprietary boxes? Make them want to buy a computer and join our complex and rich game interface.

* Captain’s Quarters:

"Without establishments and meaningful activities to engage in, forcing players into a mandatory single-player Captain’s Quarters experience was a mistake."

-so, when do you make CQ optional?

* "We also didn’t do enough to assure you that this wasn’t the beginning of a “pay to win” scenario in EVE. Let me be blunt: Unless the MMO business changes radically, our virtual goods strategy for EVE Online will remain limited in scope and focus on vanity items,...

-5 year player of EQ2 has heard these same assurances before.

* "or as we said after the CSM visit this summer: The investment of money in EVE should not give you an unfair advantage over the investment of time."

- And time is equal to money? You mean like World of Tanks and its endless grinds
to get what a "premium" account gets in half the time?

"We have reexamined our processes, hired experienced industry professionals for key leadership positions, reassessed our priorities, moved personnel around and, above all else, recognized our limitations."

-corporate speak (see George Orwell et al) translates as fire some, hire some, move them all around
-hire players instead! I'm sure they would work cheaper. (we do elect representatives, are they not listened to?
-in short, how does this finagaleing improve community input and more importantly CORPORATE response?

Well, I do applaud you for knowing that you have gotten yourselves into a bit of a hole. I still like the game. A lot.

I just read the Eurogamer interview with CCP's CEO and I have to say I now actually believe him. It's hard to imagine that any CEO could be capable of self-reflection, because we never see that in the real world. But there it is.

It's a good thing, because if the leader is incompetent, the best employees can't make up for it.

Hilmar, you've got my respect and kept it because of things like this. I, like many others, was angry that we felt that CCP was taking Eve into a direction that the players did NOT want. That is, we felt that we were getting a lot of useless fluff and the dangerous possibility of game-changing items being available ONLY through RMT. That made me mad. I felt that CCP wasn't listening to us, wasn't going to listen to the CSM any more, and in general had become disconnected from the playerbase.

These latest announcements, along with the "OMG WE GET NEW SPACESHIPS" announcement brings me great joy and has restored my faith in CCP. Your ability to admit mistakes restores my faith in you.

Keep it up, Hilmar.

As soon as this PLEX runs up, I'll just go ahead and renew for a year, because new ways to kill other people will ALWAYS get me excited.

I'm one of those people who unsubbed during the summer for reasons we all know too well at this point. Recent developments like this blog and the announced refocus on EVE have made me resub and reading about the things that are coming in the winter expansion have made me excited about the future of the game again.

I'm mainly posting this just so you know your efforts are being appreciated and they do make a difference. There is still a lot of scepticism in the air about how sincere your turn in direction really is, but honestly I care more about results and less how your management views the playerbase. They can view me as a troublesome inconvenience to their grand strategic plan all they want as long as they deliver a great game with quality content for me to play. In the same way I wont keep paying for a neglegted game or support devs that can't deliver nothing but disapointing and uninteresting content no matter how much BFFs we are in RL.

That said I like what I'm seeing from CCP at this moment and hope you the best in trying to implement it all before winter comes.

Hilmar,

I meant to write in support of you a few weeks back, but real life is what it is. It takes a lot of guts for any leader to admit what you admitted. Most CEOs in today's world typically quit and run away from the damage they caused.

Just try to keep in focus what we love about the game CCP has developed over the past decade. We love the social experience, we love the freedom, we even love that there is a criminal element (helps make it feel real compared to other MMORPGs), we love flying around in our pretty ships and looking at them, we love the opportunities the game creates for brilliant minds that are not found in real life, we love the single immersive reality, and we love the global community.

You are always going to get people leaving the game, especially in a time of global economic decline. But those of us who truly love the game are not going to leave simply because we haven't seen a new spaceship in 12 months. We're going to leave when we feel the developers no longer care for their creation or because we think they have lost touch with what makes this game excellent. The constant ridicule of bugs doesn't mean we want to leave. It just means we know you can do far better.

You have my support and best wishes moving forward from here. Thank you for your much-needed words.

Sir, that level of candid humility is knightly.

It lift's you up to where you should rightly
be, high in our esteem as one of the men
responsible for bringing us this great
experience.

Coming from one who biomassed
his main a month ago only to return; purely
because for a certain kind of mind this
game truly is without equal.

As players it is implied, but rarely said;
the level of our protest is directly
proportional to the quality of your product.

If it was terrible to begin with, we wouldn't
care enough to complain, and in that
light our rage complements you,
as your listening and honestly complements
us.

And now fear for the future of this once great mmorpg, just look at how one person can end star wars galaxies Ugh

To all the developers, GM's, community staff, and many more below CEO level, good luck to you all

Eve online is :

I would like who ever is monitoring this forum segment to please show the link below to both the EVE Game Producers and to Hellmar because in my opinion this is the kind of game thinking CCP needs to do for EVE to continue to grow and be as great as the back stories that have been written about it.

http://freebooted.blogspot.com/2011/10/free-to-play-eve-online.html

CCP's sand box is EVE Online.  The sand is owned by CCP.  We pay them a monthly fee to throw the sand at each other.  That is all that is here, so move along. Nothing more to be seen.

Just like to say I am a WIS lover here. And hope there will be a return to WIS in the future even if it is at a reduced scale so players can start to show content that WIS can give eve as a whole.
Establishments for 2012 would be awsome.

I look forward to the upcoming changes

Someday I will have the time to play. For now it is mining afk in High sec. In Cheap ships

This was Microsoft's fault, not CCP's.

They went to Microsoft first and told them what they wanted Dust 514 to do (network with EVE). Microsoft, for whatever reason, could/would not allow such communication between console and computer networks.

95% of the players are loving EVE, the other 5%? On the forums.

Agreed.
You dont know anything about your game anymore, and this rule changing where you help the gankers, then help the griefers shows it.

Youre trying to make EVERYONE happy. That never works.

I hear that a lot yet in the article that was linked about it in another thread, all I read was M$ wasnt interested in allowing the microtransaction scheme, but PS was.

Goons; infiltration at its best - first bob... now ccp itself. They dont realize you guys dot take this as "just a game". Bring it down guys, we're rooting for you.
