Freighter comparison, which of the 4 is the best for me?

I hope this question still belongs to the new player section. I've trained my character to be able to fly mining barges (I flew my retriever yesterday and my covetor today, yipee Big smile) and I'm wondering on what my next big skilling challenge should be.

I will without a doubt train to fly a hulk someday, and I would like to get a better handle on my amarr pew-pew laser ships capacitor (to much pew-pew, not enough juice Big smile), but the one aspect of the game that still fascinates me is hauling.

I would like to become proficient in one of the big freighters, I have made some research on evelopedia, eve wiki, industrial size knowledgebase, eve universities wiki, in game etc., but I couldn't find some first hand experience comparisons.

What is the difference between the providence, the fenrir, the obelisk and the charon? Which one is the best for flying cargo from trade-hub to trade-hub in high sec? Which one is good against suicide gankers? How would you fit them?

My own research tells me that the fenrir is the fastest (but is that speed difference even significant)? And the charon has the biggest hauling capacity, but what about the providence and the obelisk?

I'd much rather have a ship which is tough (or fast) enough to avoid suicide gankers, then a ship which looks good, or has a huge cargo hangar.

-

Would I be better served with a blockade runner? Or a cloaked freighter?

Thanks in advance.

Edit:
Oh by the way, I have a bestower and I love it. :-D

Some of the questions in here makes me think that you should NOT be flying a freighter.

With some little research you would have found that:

There are NO cloaky freighters.
They can't be fit because they have no fitting slots.

But on your main question, in high-sec (which is where a freighter should be and never leave in general), it really doesn't matter.

What is the difference between the 4 racial T1 freighters:

1.) Cargohold size (Caldari being the biggest, Minmatar the smallest, Amarr and Gal in between).
2.) Speed (Caldari the slowest, Minmatar the fastest, Amarr and Gal in between).
3.) Shield / Armor / Structure HP.

How to optimize survivability:

1.) Max out all tank skills.
2.) Max out the navigation skill (higher agility makes you align for warp faster).
3.) Never carry more then 1 bil in your hold.

As for the speed etc. in a suicide gank it really doesn't matter how fast you are or how tough.

Tehy will just bump you to prevent you from getting a warp-align and just bring enough firepower to gank the max trained touchest one, which means all others will die too.

But you should really think...Do I really need a freighter....Do I have freights that only fit in a freighter VERY often.

If the answer is no, I would rather go with a blockade runner / industrial and make multiple trips or just hire Red Frog.
A freighter is an investment that will only pay its money back if you use it very often (as in if possible daily).

Here's a comparison of all the freighters in EFT using 0 skills on all of them

The color rating is :

Blue, Green, Orange, Red
Best -------------------> Worst

And make sure you know that freighters don't have any module or rig slots so cloaking freighters don't exist.

Also, looking at the difference between the fenrir and the charon, yeah 10 seconds of align time is pretty significant :D

Well, that explains a lot.

Yeah if you can't fit them it doesn't really matter.
I understand now why those guides didn't explain it any further, because there is no significant difference.

OP, the differences in the freighters aren't all that much really. Yeah, the Charon has a slightly bigger cargohold, and the Fenrir is slightly faster...but doesn't make that much of a difference....go with what one you like the looks of best. There are implants you could set up a jump clone with (check out estel arador corp services for donation-price jump clones for anybody) that will give a small % of hitpoint bonus to hull and to armor (significant when talking the large amounts a freighter has to begin with) and warp speed (helps some), but those are kind of expensive. Also there is a method where an escort ship can use a stasis webifier on a freighter to lower the threshold speed it needs to get to so it will enter warp quicker...but that doesn't make it gank-proof . Then again...freighters themselves are expensive...you sure you need one? If you are mostly hauling ores/minerals around industrial ships or perhaps an Orca you might find preferable. The Iteron series (Gallente industrial) is good, with the iteron mark V maxing out at something like 38k of cargo with cargohold expanders II and cargo rigs. An Orca is a lot cheaper than a freighter and has slots you can fit modules to. I hear that both the iteron mark V and the Orca will be much easier to train for after the Summer expansion to EVE is released. o/

Fenrir IMO. The charon you'll never manage to fill anyway usually as the limitation will be cargo value rather than cargo bulk. Fenrir is at least fast.

I fill my Charon regularly, actually.
