Solo kiting frigate in enemy territory (for FW noob)

I recently got into FW for Minmatar. After get shot down a few times, I realized my skill and T1 fittings are too low for any half decent DPS or tank. And my game time is too scattered to fly with a fleet.

I don't want to give up FW either because it's fun. So I am thinking of a fast kiting frigate in which i can plex in quieter systems. Get away from stronger opponents and perhaps fight those short ranged ones if well positioned.

I can fly a bit of Minmatar, Amarr and Gallente frigates, with awkward gunnery skills (nowhere near any T2 guns), ok drone skills (just a few days from T2 light drones). I am not sure how to fit or fly a kiting gun ship. as for drone ship, i can fly Tristan but have no idea how to fit it to balance between speed, fire power and defense to make it effective in combat. (last time i fit a brawler Tristan and got crushed by T2 fitted opponent)

Would anyone share some veteran experience? Thanks.

Welcome to FW!

Let's see... Minmatar/Amarr/Gallente newbie-friendly kiters...

  • Breacher (Minmatar frigate); Fitted with light missiles and a microwarpdrive, plus anciliary shield booster, this thing can be a tough nut. Fit it instead with rockets and you get a very good brawler.
  • Tormentor (Amarr frigate); Great scram-range kiter (7-9 km). A bit difficult to fly, though, and T2 fittings/drones are needed to truly make it shine.
  • Executioner (Amarr frigate); Often overlooked, but surprisingly good with beam lasers. Watch out for cap problems.
  • Slicer (Amarr faction frigate); Not exactly cheap, and requires T2 fittings, but it is the quintessential easy-mode kiting frigate. With pulse lasers and Scorch, its optimal range is upwards of 18-20 km, and it's lightning fast.
  • Tristan (Gallente frigate); I've heard tales of railgun-equipped Tristans being awesome at kiting. Never personally witnessed it (or tried it) but it may well be possible.

I also strongly advise you look at destroyer hulls if you're into kiting. Most/all of them get range bonuses, and do spectacular amounts of damage, which often can compensate for low skill points.

  • Talwar (Minmatar) - Like the Breacher, except better. Great at MWD-kiting.
  • Thrasher (Minmatar) - Equipped with artillery, it's a great skirmish/kiting ship; with autocannons, it's a great brawler.
  • Coercer (Amarr) - My personal favorite, with beam lasers. Great range flexibility, decent tank, and surprising speed. Also works great with pulse lasers.
  • Algos (Gallente) - Hard to fit a "true" kiting setup with railguns, but has great drone damage projection, and will shred anything that comes up close with blasters.

I would also recommend reading my guide to kiting, plus other guides that may be out there.

Lastly, I wouldn't give up on brawling so easily. Both playstyles have their own merits, but neither is "easier" or superior. Also, blowing up horribly can be fun, too. I really recommend fitting up some T1 frigates/destroyers with T1 fittings and just going at it. You never know what successes, you, might, have. It's really all in the wrist about knowing what you might be able to beat, and then combining some blind luck, with some recklessness, and some skill.

Good luck out there!

i have read your epic guide before! it's recommended at many places. i will definitely go for brawling at some time, but before i can fit t2 guns it's a pain because my balster can't even break the weakest defense. i would try kiting tristan though. thanks for all these.
