What do people think about this?

I've only been playing for a week or so, so I'm really sure if this is something that would pay off for me or if its worth investing in. What do people on here usually use their alts for?

Same-account alts:
Scamming (obviously)
Spy-work (so you can't be identified)
Trading (so you can have a toon with high standings/a lot of hauling SP/a more advantageous set of clone locations)
Fixed-sp PvP (once you've maxed what you want to fly in pvp, you don't need more training and your main doesn't need the sec status hit if he's high-sec) Notable examples: Hulkageddon, piracy

Second-account alts:
An extra miner (to mine twice as hard)
A scanner/covops pilot (to scout in w-space or null for your larger boat)
Cynosural field generator (so you don't have to depend on others for jump drives)
Crash-test dummy (so you can see what your weapons do in conditions you set yourself)
PvP alt for a miner (so you can actually do something non-boring in another window while mining)
Corporation CEO (those skills and the charisma map are a waste of time on your main, now you can cross-invite all your same-account alts too)

That's all that I've got off the top of my head.

Pretty good examples.

As you can see, they aren't really required, they can just make certain things far easier. Since you are so new, I would advise highly against it. But it's entirely up to you.

If you don't know what you are going to need an alt for...You DON'T need an alt.

Only make extra accounts / alts when you know what you are going to need it for and why you need an alt for that.

This is an RvB alt for instance. I made it a while back while we had some boring SOV grinding (aka shooting structures every day) so I could still get my dose of ship explosions.

I can only add a bit to Lost Greybeard's post.

Many people use a secret alt to putter around by themselves, on days they don't feel like talking to their corpmates.

An alt can hang around one station to keep the manufacturing and research jobs running, babysit market orders, or run the POS, leaving your main character free to fly around the galaxy.

Alts can be used to post bounties, handle contracts, hire mercenaries, or troll the forums, so no one traces those actions to your main character.

Ambidextrous players with multiple accounts can fly more than one combat ship at the same time, for the extra firepower in missions or even pvp.

Players with high level characters might start a brand new alt purely for the challenge of starting from scratch again.

Some players amuse themselves by constantly creating new alts with silly names.

Spy Work works even better when done on a 2nd account, an API check on the 1st account will reveal both the main & spy character, but not if they are on seperate accounts

I don't know why this hasn't been said yet.

The #1 thing that you need an alt for is hauling cargo around. Keep him in an NPC Corp so he can't be wardecced and train him for an Iteron V, then potentially freighters, jump freighters, orcas, carriers, depending on how far you want to take it.

Well you dont need second account, but its helpfull to have. Expecially once you start to advance in eve...

For example: while your main is under a wardeck, you could have alt on another account do shopping, resupply runs, etc... and keep them both training....

We were recruiting.

Sub if you *really* need an alt running at the same time your main does, by then you'll surely know full well what you want to do with it.
