I thought it would be fun to chronicle some of my experiences as a new player, so no point in having it if no one knows about it. I'm about a week old and still doing the agent missions, but a lot of what I'm learning I hope to apply to PvP soon. Any tips, suggestions, or advice would be welcome, and I hope you enjoy reading it! Big smile

First thing that stick out to me is the horrible jaggies on that banner pic. Zoom in a bit, have the Tristan face you and run an AB or MWD fro some cool engine trails :D

Then shop some hobgobs around it :D

I cannot tell a lie, my laptop is a pos. I don't think I'm seeing what you're seeing though, but if it looks that bad then I'll try to find something different.

If you want commentary, your last post doesn't quite fit the reality of the game. Every race has a primary weapon, a secondary weapon, and a tank type, yes, but there are four tank types, not two.

Gallente's is _active_ armor. This is an important distinction because active-tank boats usually have armor and shield that aren't all that different and slot layouts that don't overwhelmingly stress mid slots or low slots exclusively. So while most fits that armor tank a Caldari ship (passive shield) or shield tank and Amarr ship (passive armor) are bad and should feel bad, shield tanking many gallente ships or armor tanking many Minmatar ships (the active shield race) is actively viable and sometimes even preferred for certain hulls.

Oh btw I'd suggest taking off the 200mm plate and fitting a damage control instead. With the extra powergrid you might be able to upgrade from electrons to ions.

Also don't forget the rigs :D

I didn't want to go into the entire conversation, but yes, I did know about the four armor types. I'm not quite sure what you mean by active armor though. Do you mean something like an armor hardener?

It'll take me a bit to get skilled enough for rigs, but I didn't forget about them. :)

And besides the 4 (Active Armor, Passive Armor, Active Shield, Passive Shield) there are Signature tanking and speed tanking and of course Hull tanking

Active = Running a module to repair your shield/armor (aka Armor Repairer or Shield Booster).
Passive = Buffing up the resists / HP so you can stay alive to survive and then later on repair what needs to be repaired

To break down the active and passive stuff for you:

- Active tanking generally means using a module you have to activate and use large amounts of cap to use
- Passive tanking is unique to shields and uses mainly the recharge rate of the shield to repair lost HP
- Buffer tanking means you fit the largest amount of EHP you can in an effort to out last the enemy where normally you would have died within only a few cycles of an active tank.

EHP stands for Effective HP. It's the HP value you get when taking resistances into account, usually assumed to be done with omni damage (even damage coming from all damage types) Ex: 100 armor HP with a 50% resistance on all types would be said to have 200 EHP, with 75% resistance it would be 400 EHP, 90% would be 1000 EHP

All forms of the 3 tanks above can use a combination of active or passive hardeners. (If ti has hardener in the name then it's active, if it's a membrane, plate or amplifier then it's passive)

Signature and speed tanking isn't actually a form of tank in the traditional sense. It means to avoid damage with high speed and low signature radius. The smaller signature radius is key because it determines how large of a target you appear electronically. The larger your sig the easier you are to be locked, hit by guns, and even scanned by probes.

Missiles are a little different in that they use explosion radius. If your sig is smaller than a missile's explosion radius you'll take reduced damage. You'll also take reduced damage if you are moving faster than the explosion velocity.

There's also ECM tanking. Not actually fitting much of any tank to the ship (much like a speed and sig tank would work) and simply going all out on ECM jamming modules. This tank relies on good ECM skills and good bonuses on the ship you're flying to keep the person target jammed so that they cannot fire back at you.

No, especially since I didn't realize I already had it trained to level 3. :) It's easy for me to get so caught up in planning that I forget what I've already done.

This is very helpful. I'm not a huge fan of anything that uses cap, which is why I like the plating instead of the shield booster. Part of the reason I kept having to warp back to station was because my armor repairer and shield booster would drain the cap and I couldn't wait for it to recharge. I know it's heavy on the power grid, but I'm willing to sacrifice that this early and train Engineering skills to get full usage.

Run an armour repairer *or* a shield booster, but not both.

Armor repairer or armor plates, not both, and armor plates for pvp only..

As far as armor is concerned, think of it like housecleaning.

You've got guests coming. You want to keep your house from being a total pig sty.

You can either not buy things that leave as big of a mess - less packaging and stuff (resistance), or you can get a bigger house (buffer), or you can clean (repairer).

If you have a small house, it doesn't take long to clean, and if you bring less of a mess in, it's a snap to clean. (Repair + resistance)

If you have a huge mansion, you can go for days without cleaning, and you can go even longer if you're being careful with bringing things in. (Resistance + Buffer).

But cleaning a huge mansion (Repair + Buffer) is REALLY REALLY ANNOYING.

You can also zoom around your target so that their guns cant track you - "Hey, I have a better idea, there's this awesome restaurant right across the street, lets go there!"

or you can stay so far back that they cant hit you - "Dude, she lives thirty miles out of town, cant we just chat on the phone instead?"

or you can use Ewar to mess up their ability to hit - "I couldn't find your house, I looked you up and it said your house was in the middle of the lake or something? Seriously, your address must be wrong."

Also wanted to add - Shield tanking is like rolling out the barbecue and the picnic tables and having your party on the yard. Armor tanking is like having tour party indoors, If you're running in and out of the house trying to keep both the yard and the house in order, you're going to run yourself ragged (and run out of cap), so pick one or the other and do something useful with the other one. Plus, each one's buffer does something to make the other harder - shield extenders make you bigger, and plates slow you down, put them together and you're going to be getting clobbered harder than you would have been otherwise.

For most missions, stacking mission-specific resistances does a bit better than a DCU. Plates are good for a PVP tank though.

Also, the Tristan uses drones as the primary DPS source. If you don't have high drone skills or don't want to deal with NPC aggression against drones, you might want to try an Incursus which potentially has a better tank or DPS as a blaster-brawler. The basic tanking ideas stay the same.
