(Obviously OOC)

Hey all, while I've been playing EVE for years on my main, I originally started this alt with the intent of getting invloved in the AJ project but both it and I got sidelined. Until AJ gets up and running again, I thought it would be interesting to try to get involved a little more in the RP community. I actually have been playing this toon more than my main for spell now, and if and when AJ gets up and running again I would like to have some prior knowledge of the "rules and regulations" of EVE Roleplaying Blink

So, my questions are this:

1) Are there any in-game chat channels for the RP community as whole? Or just ones for individual organizations?

2) How much interaction is required to be "In-character"? Basically, I have really good "In-character ideas" (I think at least, lol) but I suck at "acting" in-character. Does the RP community really frown on bad RPers, to the point of not bothering to interact with them?

3) Are there any RP moderators a newbie can ask questions to (non-gameplay, more like "Who do I talk to for information about X organization?)

4) Is a player supposed to declare their loyalty (in the thread with the same name) before interacting with the community?

I guess, kinda like sex, I expect my first interactions with the RP community may be awkward, and I just need to be reassured Roll

So any additional information or resources you guys could provide would be awesome. Hope to see you in space, and thanks in advance.

Hey, glad to see more people joining the RP community.

1) Try joining the in game chat channels "The Summit" and "OOC". They're the two biggest generic roleplay channels. Spend some time just hanging around, watching, lurking etc and you should get a good idea of how things are done.

People in OOC are usually happy to answer questions about lore and give suggestions about your RP.

2) Interaction with RPers usually goes into either OOC categories or IC categories. Acting in character isn't that hard, and honestly I wouldn't make your character act way too out of the established norm for yourself. People in YC 114 tend talk a lot like we do. Who knew?!

3) Theres no in game moderators but you can usually figure out who are the people who have really delved into the lore for particular factions fairly quickly. Ask around OOC.

4) No need to declare loyalties at all!

You can totally just start talking and RPing if the mood strikes you, by the way.

Just don't start talking while using "Thee" and "Thou", or we will, in character, punch you through the internet.

It's not really necessary to 'act'

The main thing is avoid talking about things your character has no knowledge about when IC.

That includes CCP, most of the Chronicles and the match results of your favourite team.

^^^This helps. I was thinking of disbanding my 1-man corp and making a new one specifically for RP purposes (same function, industry). This way I can "start over" with a mindset of "who I am" and "what I know."

Hmmm.... this weekend will be fun.

1. Yes many, http://backstage.eve-inspiracy.com/index.php these are the EVE "RP forums" where a lot of stuff is discussed, I believe there is a thread in there listing most the channels.

2. This goes the same as most RP with a large variety of people. There are those who are stuck in their ways and if you don't RP how they want they get indignant about it. Then there are those who are laid back and will take most RP happily.
As long as you're not trying to RP something that doesn't fit the setting (I believe we have had space vampires and werewolves before) then most don't care.
There are a lot of people who try to speak very formal when talking, although if you read the EVE books and some lore you will see that most people chat as we do, swearing included.

3. Use OOC brackets in any RP channel or the forums I linked above, most people are willing to help.

4. Not at all, if you're not sure where your loyalties lie yet then wait and make your choice when you do, you're an immortal with no true tires to any major NPC factions any more.

*edit*

This is also a great tool if you're having some problems trying to find the right feel for your character: http://www.miniworld.com/adnd/100ThingsAboutUrPCBackGround.

The last piece of advice I can give you is try not to make your background too much of your story, you will need some non gameplay stuff to define who you are but use your years in EVE as a capsuleer as your true history.
Maybe you have only been in an indy corp all that time and not much has happened but I am sure you still have some stories of things that you or your corp experienced, THOSE are the parts that make your character who they are because they were unscripted an natural.

Many people also make evelopedia entries with some information or history of their characters, mine is here and you can get an idea how my ingame history is most of Turelus' life (with the exception of the dead parents, that one is breaking my own rules quite badly) http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Turelus_%28Character%29
Knowing where you come from really does well in setting up who you are.

Some good advice in here Cool

I also hang around in the "OOC" channel a lot, as well as "Live Events" because I like to keep in touch with the RP Community and spend a lot of my spare time making sure people are all good Smile

Feel free to poke me in those channels for advice too Cool

I too hang around those channels a bit, though not as much as Falcon because I am often too distracted/forgetful to log into my EVE client while at work.

My answers are going to be more or less the same as the ones before me, so you've been warned. :P

1) There are lots. "OOC" is the primary "out of character" channel for the community, and "The Summit" is the primary in-character "chatter" channel. You can read more about the Summit here, and I try to keep the MOTD updated here for those who can't get ingame to see. If you need a list of channels, you can look here but I can't guarantee it's completely up to date. Check with people in OOC if you aren't sure.

2) Depends on what sort of character you want to play with. You can get pretty far with very few words (and, of course, you can also get almost nowhere with a lot of them), but there's more to it than that. That said, RP is about interaction - you will definitely go nowhere if you don't interact at all. Join some of the channels and lurk a bit, watch other people for a while. See how people interact with each other, then when you feel comfortable, jump right in.

3) We don't have "RP moderators" in the sense that a DnD game has a DM. Most channels will have active moderators to help keep the peace and enforce some sort of standards of conduct (OOC and The Summit share the same moderation team, for example, visible in the MOTD link above). The community mostly moderates itself in that sense as far as what is considered "acceptable" and what is not, however.

4) No. There's no need to declare loyalty in that thread at all. It's a record for the live events team to know who they can poke when they have an event planned for a particular faction. Spend some time RPing with your character(s) before you decide on that sort of thing - unless you are intentionally going for a loyalist character.

Thank you Raderis for asking this questions and thanks to everyone who answered them. All this will also help me to get finally in RP here.

See you people in The Summit. Blink
