you already answered your own question - rather open up a new group of customers (with a slightly different demographic) than try to milk your existing customers a second time (you can always do that later when the first approach does not work out).

then there are supposedly issues with gamepad controllers vs keyboard/mouse combos (iirc developers can disable the use of keyboard/mouse in their games on modern consoles) - and you would probably have to experiment with differently-sized hitboxes etc. to keep the game balanced-

CCP wanted to make a console game, cos, you know, they are the thing right now. They also wanted to make something diferent like EVE was all those years ago. An almost free to play console game with tactical advantages. When you take a hill in Dust you actually take it, not like playing the same maps over and over to get kills.
