So I've been running a number of low-sec gate camps in the past hour, particularly in the Parts system, where they seem to have a small gang on both gates, and I'm wondering.... why do I hear so much complaining about low sec gate camps if they're so easy to run through? I see it used frequently as an excuse reason for avoiding low sec, but it's coming across as very weak.

ADDENDUM: This is not a troll. I am genuinely curious as to what people's problems are with gate camps. Maybe I can help you.

Try going through Rancer when they have 20 smartbomb battleships on each gate, and 4000 scanres Arazu tacklers with tornado's sitting at 70km on both gates as well.

Yeah, have fun catching nothing but cheap frigates and cov ops.

Meanwhile gate camps keep people from taking more expensive ships into lowsec, in greater numbers.

Most low-sec gate camps are guarded by small unorganized groups of players with poor reaction times and I often can get through them in a Mammoth (it is actually harder in the Mastodon as the 3 extra seconds need to align is enough for the other point ships to wake up and pin you, DSTs suck). Even in an industrial, you can often get away from them before the ships with the big guns can fire on you.

There are a few places you just don't go, like the places with the glowing orange blobs on the map, because those are often being watched by compitent groups with fast pointers or SB battleships. As a rule you also avoid systems that are in direct line between trade hubs (ie, the way the autopilot tells you to go).

If you have to regularly travel a low-sec route you should have insta-bookmarks off the gates anyways, failure to do can result in an insta-BM instead.

Shooting at neuts in rookie ships? Impossibru. Why, it's not like they might be alts for someone who's coming to gather intel on them or anything.

Also.... I think I'll have to try that Rancer run some time, too Twisted

The tough ones are always the prepared ones who are very nearly ready for anything. The more ships, SEBOs, points, etc.. they have, the better chance they will catch you. Bubbles in Null make it easier there, but players have been know to use other tactics as well.

I almost locked and pointed a Breacher before it left gate tonight--in just a Thrasher--, but missed it anyway, by a about a second, and that's all it takes.

Just think of it this way: SEBO + point on gate, and you start at ~12 km from gate when you decloak. If they are spead out, and have high scan res and good reaction time, there is a very good chance they'll get a point on you. You might outrun it, but if they have Stasis webs they can get on you, they can close the range on the point and keep you there. After that, it's just numbers and dps.

Warp Stabs and ship bonuses to that effect aside, but even they can be stopped with greater numbers and more points/scrams. It all just depends on what they got, there range, and how fast they bring it to bear on you. Determined groups will have numbers and practice in keeping people on gate.

Inexperienced players of course, often don't know what it takes to catch a ship, and then you have to account for lesser skill bonuses in Navigation and sometimes random fitting without really knowing what is best for the situation, or what a good balance is for their ship and what they are doing with it.

Balance in fittings is usually the tough part, even after you know what you should be fitting for the task, or about. That takes time, skill training, and some measure of experience, so it isn't really a surprise that newer players get caught, or even that older players less experienced in those areas do.
