Types of military roles?

Was checking out the EVE University Careers 101 page and while I am deciding what I want to do still I was wondering if someone can explain one aspect of one of the careers. The career was military and I was curious what kinds of roles there are.

For example, there are Logistics (remote armor repair etc), Stealth Bombers, Covert Ops, etc etc. Was wondering if there is a resource out there that might list these or discuss some of them so I can look into them more and see if I can come up with a skill plan. If there isn't a resource, even a list of some roles and I can search each one out individually.

Not sure if it makes a huge difference but I am curious about both PVP and PVE roles (incursions I guess?).

Tacklers are the best position for new people, always in demand (PvP, don't know too much about nor give a rat's ass about PvE)

It'd be easier to simply ask about what roles you are looking for (see: damage dealer, scout, interception, etc.) than asking what roles there are.

Basically, anything and everything in the game can be use in some military capacity. The only limits you will run into early on are costs and character skills. After awhile, it will be your knowledge of the game's mechanics (e.g. how weapons work, how speed factors into combat, how you fit your ship for which situation) and the people you know.

PlunderBunny's recommendation (being a "Tackler"***) is usually the first step in any "combat" career regardless of which path you take though.
As he/she/it said... no PvPer will refuse a newbie with a ship fitted for this job/role. In addition, it's usually cheap ("tackle" frigates cost about 500k... and a good group of vets will be MORE than happy to give you a new one if you prove to be good at using it) and will teach you some of the "basics."

*** Before I forget... a "Tackler" is someone who fits his/her ship (usually a fast frigate) with a MicroWarpdrive, Stasis Webifier, and Warp Disruptor/Scrambler. The point of this role is to "intercept" a target and "pin" them until everyone else can arrive. Chances of survival are not high... but, as said before, beginner fits are cheap as dirt and people will usually toss you free ships/stuff.

This.

The list of possible roles in PvP is huge. In PvE it's much shorter.

But it's better to ask yourself first, what type of thing do I like to be.

A small summary:

* Tackler = described above
* Logi = Remote repair guy (even more viable now with the T1 frigate and T1 cruiser versions)
* DPS Grunt = Shoot what your told to shoot till it's dead, then move to the next one.
* FC = Fleet commander, he who calls the shots.
* Target Caller = Assisting the FC in calling the targets that have to be shot (usually in bigger fleets only, where the FC is already busy with other stuff).
* Scout = He who moves ahead of the fleet (+1 scout) or trails behind (-1 scout) to check if there are target or if someone is following the fleet.
* Prober = He who tries to find targets with probes (sometimes combined with the scout function)
* Booster = He who provides boosts to the fleet.
* EWAR = He who provides EWAR support. Be it in jamming, long points, long webs or such things.

And maybe some stuff I forgot.

Roles depedent on what ship you are flying - tackle (including interdiction and long points/webs), dps, logi, booster, ewar (including neuts), scout, capitals.

Roles independent of what ship you are flying - FC, target caller, anchor, optional sub fcs.

Tackler - stop the enemy getting away basically, though can also aid in damage application by making enemy easier to hit.

Ships specialised for this = t1 frigs (attack especially), some t1 cruisers (attack like stabber), assault frigs (though also good for dps) interceptors, interdictors, heavy interdictors, gallente and minmatar electronic attack frigates, g+m recons, g+m t3s, some hacs (like vagabond)most faction frigs, some faction cruisers

Dps - apply damage to the enemy

Ships specialised for this = some t1 cruisers (combat like thorax), t1 bcs, t1 bs (except scorpion), bombers (specialised dps), most hacs, command ships (dual role with booster), t3s, black ops (specialist dps).

logi - keep friendly ships alive through repair

Ships specialised for this = t1 support frigs, t1 support cruisers, logistics

Booster - provides bonuses to entire fleet

Shis specialised for this = command ships, booster fit t3s, t1 bcs have limited ability

Ewar - disrupts the enemy (includes neuts)

Ships specialised for this = t1 disruption frigates, t1 disruption cruisers, electronic attack frigates (g+m more tackle orientated), recons (g+m more tackle orientated), scorpion bs, widow, blood raiderships (neuting).

Scout - locates and monitors the enemy

Ships specialised for this = covert ops, bombers (have other roles too), force recons (have other roles too), cov ops t3s.

Capitals - have thier own more complex roles, dreads = dps but only against other caps or structures, carriers = logi and dps or just logi if triage, supercarriers = dps but only against oter caps or structures, titans = dps against other caps or structure + bonus + jump bridge role.

Pilot roles - Fc = running the fleet, target caller calls targets (fc can do this), anchor keeps fleet in place (fc can do this).

as has been said, roles are part of the breakdown of combat at the more advanced stages, and your ability to benefit a gang or fleet is based on these.

personally i would recommend pimping our tank and ewar skills at start, so you can bait and tackle for gangwork, and then gradually become a damage dealer :)

but its all a question of what you think is cool, i started as bait and tackle, then threw on drones. got my first above tier kill about 4 weeks into the game when a ferox engaged my arbitrator :)
