weird market question

I'm just about to start a stint of buy-haul-sell and figured I would start with something like ammo, that I could haul butt loads of in a frigate to avoid unwanted attention. That is when I ran into this.

There is a buy order at jita 4-4 for 65m antimatter-s at 120isk per bullet!?! This stuff sells all over the galaxy at less than a 1/4 of that price and most buy orders are MUCH lower.

What am I missing here? Is reprocessing antimatter really that profitable? Is it a scam? Is there another possibility that I haven't even thought of.

Insert something witty and clever here

It's a scam, you buy it from closest seller at 1/4 that price. Then haul it to Jita & try to sell but the sale will fail because the seller has no money in their wallet (welcome to the margin trading scam)

But congrats you bought from the alt of the guy with the buy order :D

I have deliberately developed an air of cynicism that I originally intended to make me appear somewhat louche and caddish but actually comes across as irritable hostility combined with the unspoken threat of sudden violence.....

It's a likely scam. Just look at the min volume of the order and the order immediately pops up as an oddity. It will likely fail when someone tries to fullfill it.

I see. Thanks for the heads up. I haven't actually bought anything yet so I guess I dodged a bullet there. And I was actually looking at buying ammo in another region all together so that particular alt can suck some chode.

Is there a clear way to identify this type of scam other than the astoundingly high price?

Just check for buyorders with minimum value > 1. They are pretty much all a scam, especially in Jita.

i didn't even realize that you could set a minimum value to fill the order. thanks, i'll have to start looking for those and see if i can't figure out a way to take advantage of the scammers ;)

Nah.

The scam sign is if the Buy Order has a minimum value that's equal to the total desired amount. Or if the minimum amount does not look reasonable. For instance, when setting up Buy Orders for ore, it's quite reasonable to set the minimum amount to be equal to the refine amount, e.g. 333 units for low-end ores, so that you don't get other people's post-refining leftovers. Or if you create a Buy Order to cover a lot of stations and systems, e.g. a Buy Order with a range of 2 or 3 jumps, then you might well set the minimum amount to >1 just to avoid too much having to fly around and pick up single units.

Easiest way to identify a scam:

If it looks too good to be true, it /is/ too good to be true.
