New space games want to replace EvE

I love to play any kind of space game, but in the past year or two EvE has been my main game.

There are two reasons for this, EvE is a wonderful game... and there aren't any other good space games tbh.

Two new games coming out Elite: Dangerous and Star citizen seem to be taking an aim at EvE's fanbase.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1461411552/elite-dangerous

All I can hear them saying are things like "Open market, losing ships, pirating, owning corps, bounty hunting" Things that I consider when I think of EvE. Listen to the Developer talk for "Elite" Basically sounds like hes describing a new EvE online.

Now my question is.. How do you guys feel about these new games coming out? Do you think they are trying to become like eve or just some other boring space game?

Most importantly... How will CCP react to having this kind of competition? If it was up to me, I'd prefer EvE over any of these anyday. But what they are promising is also very interesting.

They'll be lucky to deliver on 10% of what they promise.

More then likely both games will end up being nice looking theme-parks that you play for a couple of weeks and shelve forever.

Welcome to a week (or three) ago in OOPE.

…and neither game offers anything that lets it replace EVE.

If the games can give me something where I can dominate a market, kill ships that arent replaced in station or spawn or whatever they do, let me be a pirate, and go exploring all while I own a corp in some sort of sov space. AND be F2P like they say, then EVE has a run for its money.

I really hope Elite does succeed as if it wasn't for the original version, games like Eve probably wouldn't exist.

They're both P2W, so this is a pretty pathetic stealth Eve is dieing thread.

'Spaceships' is the least important part of what makes Eve distinct.

I also think these games are going to tank and will not deliver anything better then EVE.

Roberts Space Industry i have a gold card for, but i decided not to fund, because it promises to become some sort of a single player game in space. In the introduction movie i noticed the baddies being Kilrathi ships, but when i asked the devs there if it would be possible to play as Kilrathi, all i got was a deafening silence. And if they reach 4 million in pledges, they are going to have........here it comes....... 50 (FIFTY) solar systems.

Thats a bit meager compared to EVE's several thousand systems.

I think RSI is going to be something like Privateer 2 The Darkening with multiplayer.

Elite i'll be keeping an eye on. But i don't expect much, and most certainly these games are not going to be sandbox style.

dude

let me lay this out for you

no one cares about eve online except the people who play it

everquest
runescape
hello kitty online

all have more players than eve online and the companies make more money than ccp

fact

get over yourself

I'm new, but looking around, EVE has nearly a decade on any competition with respect to:

  • Community
  • 3rd party tools/sites
  • Immersion
  • All around meta-game that makes it so golly-gosh-darn (damn profanity filter) fun.

'Course, I'm just a noob.

EvE, it's all about tear managment.

Considering CCP is at about 10%...that seems about right....Cool

I just wish eve could be a game that you could play as a single player PVE there is nice content in game but inaccessible due to fat heads of other people coming in to ruin your good time...yeah yeah I know EVE isn't that game HTFU.
But Star citizen does offer PVE single player content. Hummm interesting.

As there are already a few different threads discussing this over in OOPE, I'll direct you there where you can carry on this discussion, and pop a lock on this thread. Thread in OOPE regarding Elite. - ISD Type40.

Well regardless of whether you love or hate it (I love it btw lol); you can't deny that EVE has truely pioneered the open-sandbox style of gameplay. That's probably both it's most enduring trait and greatest weakness, especially to players coming from other games like WoW or SWTOR.

Now with that said I must confess that Star Citizen looks AMAZING - it's exactly what I had hoped EVE would be before I started playing, that is; fully rendered ship internals, NPC's to command, realistic and exciting space battles, etc. Even though I've kind of grown to love EVE's 3rd-person "you as the ship" style of gameplay, the inner nerd in me can't help but get excited by projects like this.

Hopefully Team Avatar will bring us some of that "fps-style" loving in this new stuff they've got cooking Twisted
