I am a very new player...

I want to be Explorer but at this point I am doing some missions. If at my level I would like to do some exploration/missions in 1 ship (without changing ships) ... should I get the Thorax or the Vexor... any suggestions? IS there a huge difference? (I see I can use more drones in the Vexor)

Vexor. Better for PVE in just about every way. As for exploring in one ship, it's pretty hard to do early on. You MIGHT be able to do it in a vexor but you may spend way too much time probing because it lacks bonuses to it. I have an RL friend that would solo radar sites in an Imicus and that worked out very well for him. Ideally you should probe in an imicus and then switch ships and come back in whatever is optimal for the particular site.

Vexor, because of the drones. Drones will be your main weapons, freeing precious slots for the modules you need to explore (probe launcher, maybe salvager, tractor beam, cloak...). As for the probe bonus, well, you can forget it, because after frigates there's no bonus anymore. (yeah yeah in T3, but he is a new player, so that is very far away). Train your scanning skills to 4 (astrometrics, Astrometric Rangefinding, Astrometric Pinpointing) and you won't even need the bonus, so yes you can very well use an all in one ship, and the vexor is great for that, and cheap.

Thank you ... I was thinking the same ... quick questions related to your answers:

- Why would I need the tractor beam? Is that to pull my other ships as i travel?
- I see that currently I can operate 3 drones (5 at lvl 5 Drones) ... Yet I can fit 10 in a vexor? Does that mean that I can use 5 battle drones and then use the other 5 for mining or whatever else?

1) A tractor beam is not essential, you can very well live without. But if you loot/salvage, and if you have a free high slot, why not using one, as it will save you much time (by allowing you to pull the wrecks/containers from 20km away), and even more time in missions, where the wrecks are plenty).

2) There are two factors concerning drones, for a ship :
a) the drone bay. it's the volumes of drones you can take with you. so for example a volume of 50m3 will allow you to take 10 small drones with you, or 5 medium, or 2 heavy or sentries...
b) the bandwidth : that is the volume of drones you can launch and use in space at one time. BUT, the maximum of drones you can use is always 5 (when your drone skill is at level 5).So with a bandwith of 50 Mbits for example, you can use only 5 small drones, or 5 mediums, or 2 heavy/sentries... (if you have the right skills of course).
So basically the drone bay is your reserve of ammunitions.

It is also common to carry different sizes for different purposes. The smaller the drone the better the tracking so basically you carry lights for frigates, mediums for cruisers and heavies for battleships. You can also carry ECM drones to help you break target lock if someone tries to jump you. The possibilities are endless. Really what I'm trying to say is you don't just carry extras of the same type, you typically carry a variety. Furthermore different racial drones do different damage types.

Use medium gravity capacitor upgrade rigs on the Vexor and it'll do fine

I posted about this very thing in another thread, here. It has links to a suggested fit for the Vexor, as well as other info that helped me with similar choices.

This thread was most informative about the mechanics and implementation of Drone use.

Good luck!

I would strongly suggest scanning in the imicus (with scanning rigs) and running radars in it, then switching to something with a little more gusto then a cruiser to run the bigger sites (DED sites). Maybe a myrm, has good tank and nice drone damage.

early on with low SP ,you will find your able to run things faster even with ship switching. If your heart is set on using one ship to run everything i would work toward a T2, or pirate cruiser, the cynabal has worked well for me, i know other have used HAC's.

I would suggest looking at scanning implants as well if your going to be staying in highsec.

for highsec explo something like this is all you need

edit: dont listen to everyone who says scan with another ship. if your in high sec and have decent scan skills like 4,3,3,3 (which only takes a few days at most) you will be fine... Cus while your running back 5-6 jumps to grab your combat ship to run the site you just scanned, someone else is running your site for you. Done it enough to know how it works.

I used a Gila all in one for about 3 months of highsec explo as my one and only profession, only like 3 mag sites I was unable to scan 100% and **** mag sites anyways.
