Highsec mining only viable post-lobotamy?

Within a week of my Eve career starting I'd been approached and had joined a very friendly corp based in null sec. I spent my first few weeks in high sec learning the basics then was escorted to null sec where I've lived quite contentedly for the past 8 months. Besides logging an alt in Jita to check prices every now and again I have not left null for many months. If I want something hauled to high sec I contract it to our jump freighter guys, if I want something unavaiable on the market in null I sent our jump freighter guys a shopping list and a ten percent kicker and all is well. That is until about two days ago.

A good friend of mine from the real world finally realised that Diablo 3 is basically digital cancer; I saw an opportunity and he has now subscribed to internet spaceships. Being a good friend I have now relocated to a system on the fringes of high sec to teach him the ropes. This, I thought, would be a lovely opportunity to live out a week or two as a high sec carebear, mining the less valuable ores that our corp seems utterly incapable of locating for our capital production projects (as much as our CEO insists we can't, we're still trying to build stuff purely from megacyte).

So, the first hour of mining isn't so bad. Yes, the people in local seem to have an IQ deficit of probably 20 points on their counterparts in null sec, but it's not that bad. Hour two and I'm beginning to loose a little hope. Having read the forums I was missled into thinking that mining highsec was basically an AFK job, I put on Star Trek IV expecting to relax with Kirk and the gang on a whale finding adventure, but it was not to be. In Null sec the roids are big, really big. I've seen spodumain roids that would be palacial even for the space slug off star wars. But not in high sec, after only 2-3 cycles of strip mining its time to lock down another roid.

Im not writing this to promote the pilgrimage to nullsec (though to be honest I feel now that highsec is to null sec as masturbation is to sex*), I'm not writing this post to shed tears or encourage anger, I'm just writing this post because it breaks the tedium of spending another hour in this bastion of boredom.

So basically you tell us the roids in hisec are smaller, right ? Why the wall of text ?

If the first thing you do with a friend who joins EVE is take him mining, then you're a terrible friend.

I wrote some true EVE stories! And no, they're not of the generic "my 0.0 alliance had lots of 0.0 fleets and took a lot of 0.0 space" sort. Check them out here:

Then don't mine in high sec.

And stop complaining.

No, if from my post you assume I'm moaning about high-sec not being afkable enough then you've either got the wrong end of the stick or I've not made myself very clear. Highsec mining, and infact any EVE activity shouldn't be afkable in my opinion. What I was getting at was a new found respect for people capable of doing this activity day in day out for many months/years.

And no, I have no intention of introducing my friend to EVE through the medium of high sec mining, it's just what I've been doing whilst he's been offline.

Mining is not my profession, nor could it ever be.

We all know the mechanics suck. You're preaching to the choir.
We can only hope the ring mining will actually be slightly entertaining and eventually replace current mining if it is better.

Is a "labotomy" being violently removed from one's lab?

Post with your monkey.

Those "people" are either bots, or have some severe issues with their mental health. That's not to say I am disrespectful toward those individuals. They simply have issues like an extreme focus on routines. No one who is normal mines like that for years without automating at least part of the process.

It's good that you're not pulling your friend into that, then. If you'd like a suggestion, either take him along to FW for some frigate combat (it's terrible, but still has a sliver of merit, and is likely to improve soon), or wardec some local bear corporation and have some fun together. Doing fun stuff like that will result in a long-term stay in EVE.

I think it's removal, cutting or separation of a lab from something.

So...hisec roids are too small? You're not able to AFK in the manner you'd like to? Is that my take-away here?

If you want a truly AFK experience, just go mine ice. Target an ice roid, throw out some drones, turn on your lasers, and check back every half-hour or so. Mining in high isn't the snooze-fest it is out in null, but it's also a lot more lucrative. (Scord right now is second only to Ark in terms of ISK/hr, believe it or not.)

Ok, first - nice to see some decent input from you guys, I was worried for a moment there I was going to get buried under a wave of vitreol.

Second, a labotomy is a punishment inflicted on criminals going back 50 years or so where part of the persons brain was removed, leaving them capable of living, but with no higher level thought. Only basic tasks could be managed by someone who had been labotomised, leaving them in no condition to cause future harm to a society.

third, I haven't tried faction warfare, seeing as this is the longest I've spent in high sec for many months. I'm more inclined to go with the"annoy the bear" option.

Your take-away would of improved significantly had you read my second and third posts ammending my initial discourse.

Spoiler: when people say they afk mine in hisec, that means they are doing something else while a bot runs the miner for them.
